Chicago is cementing its position as literary rainmaker. First there was Oprah's book-club, which can turn writers into millionaires overnight. Now the city fathers are asking every man, woman and teenager to read To Kill a Mockingbird simultaneously, and so encourage Chicagoans to talk about something besides Internet porn and the life and times of Friends.
