Trademark law as a back-door to crushing free speech

Trademark law is supposed to afford protection from misleading appropriations of registered marks. It's not a back-door to quashing free speech — especially when the alleged infringement is clearly parodical. So why is the Texas GOP sending lawerly nastygrams to the activists who run "EnronOwnsTheGOP.com," asserting that their logo (which depicts the Enron logo superimposed over an elephant) will confuse visitors and lead them to believe that the Texas GOP endorses the site?
