Spiked Online, a UK tech site, is hosting a debate about the appropriate way for copyright infringement to be dealt with online. On one side is David Stoll, board director at British Music Rights, who argues that ISPs should have to adhere to a code of ethics, taking down any material that is alleged to infringe upon receiving notice of that material. On the other side is Sandy Starr, coordinator, spiked-IT, who argues that takedown regimes substitute that which is expedient for that which is just — yes, suing to have infringing material removed is a slow process, but the sloth of the courts is a feature, not a bug. Courts are slow because they gather the facts before acting, and err on the side of caution. There's a live component of the debate that kicks off on Sept 10, and you can participate.
