MIT electrical engineering grad student Seth Coe-Sullivan won Nikon's 2005 Small World Photomicrography Competition with this shot. The image depicts quantum dot nanocrystals that Coe-Sullivan was studying for possible use in light bulbs and cell phone. Each "coffee bean" shape is approximately the diameter of a human hair.
