for British comedy you might also want to try “Look Around You” [spoof science show], “Spaced” [from Simon Pegg of "Shaun of the Dead"], “Nathan Barley” [new media brat spoof], “The Thick of It” [spin-doctor comedy in the same realist style as "The Larry Sanders Show" or "The Office"]

and check out the original (real) British “The Office” if you haven’t already. the NBC remake is sentimental in comparison.

oh and Chris Morris (Denholm Reynholm in The IT Crowd) did “Jam”, “Brass Eye” and “The Day Today”. “Jam” is the darkest comedy ever to appear on TV, and “Brass Eye” & “The Day Today” are TV-news satires that make “The Daily Show” look about as edgy as “Everybody Loves Raymond”.

ian holmes > on the money. Boosh, Barley & Snuffbox whip ass on The IT Crowd. It had potential- Richard Ayoade’s Moss is gold, and nice to see Matt Berry in there now, but the canned laugh track, katherine parkinson’s wooden acting, and the blokey & clumsy writing mean that its never going to go anywhere really funny.

How could you guys have a regular post about “The IT Crowd” and just a passing mention of “The Mighty Boosh”?!?! The more you watch these shows, the more you realize a lot of the actors are in each other’s projects. Boosh are amazing. Their third series is coming soon; it’ll be set in a shop this time, I think.

I don’t understand why a standard British season (er, series) is so short. What do they do air during the rest of the year?

The Roman Holiday knock-off was cute.

It’s eight episodes isn’t it? I do believe I read that right here on Boing Boing.

I think this series of the show is better than the first, and there’s been a couple of episodes that had me actually roaring with laughter — the dinner party one reminded me rather a lot of real life incidents, if writ large. Still, out of the six episodes thus far this series, there’s not been a single fully consistent episode, and there’s been a couple with long stretches of fail.

On the whole, though, it’s better than The Big Band Theory. I wasn’t able to get through the pilot. It’s also better than Hyperdrive, which somehow managed to get a second season despite being a warmed-over Red Dwarf knockoff.

Mighty Boosh is in a whole other league compared to this and is easily the funniest thing my eyeballs have ever had the pleasure of viewing. IT crowd is average at best.

and jen, not funny? are you kidding? (well ok, her material is a little soft this season) but seriously, s01ep02? (and ep 5 as well)…i dont think ive ever seen anyone BE funnier. its her faces that kill me. shoes? …shoes?

series 2 has been a complete disappointment. Its very discouraging to see the quality drop so precipitously from the very sharp first season.

i would echo many of the complaints mentioned above – the canned laughs, the bawdy unfunny themes of many of the episodes, and the divergence from the ‘IT’ theme of the IT crowd.

i think i must be missing something. i’ve never understood exactly why people think the IT crowd is so funny.

i love ‘dark place’ & father ted – own the dvds and think ayodade is one of the funniest actors on british tv, but i’ve been generally unimpressed with both seasons.

i was expecting a lot from Lineham. Something a) nearly as funny as ‘father ted’ or b) a sitcom with IT jokes in it & smacks of Chris Morris (all hail). the IT crowd doesn’t seem to fall into any category other than ‘generic sitcom’ and just hangs between possible laughs. e.g. the team night out episode (going to theatre) didn’t have a single IT joke in it. The new character of douglas just seems like a clone of ‘peterman’ from seinfeld.

Some of the blame should lie with katherine parkinson who just seems to force ‘jen’ onto the screen. i’m sorry to say she doesn’t deliver her lines that well, often making me think she is squinting at dummy boards (she isn’t).

In short – its not a very good sitcom. Blame whoever you want, just don’t let it go to season 3.

As someone who has spent far too much time this year downloading British comedies, I offer a brief guide to a few of thse mentioned by others above (in particular shows that have some connection to The I.T. Crowd):

DARKPLACE is mainly a parody of the miniseries “Kingdom” by Lars von Trier (later re-made by Stephen King as “Kingdom Hospital”. But yeah, great sci-fi parody, particularly ep 4, The Apes of Wrath. (Richard Ayoade, Matthew Holness, Matt Berry, Julian Barratt, Noel Fielding)

*Also fun is the Garth Marenghi interview in first ep of spinoff show Man to Man with Dean Learner.

THE MIGHTY BOOSH is a whole different vein, a wonderful surrealist musical about the adventures of a goth and a psuedo-intellectual. Check out S02E06, The Nightmare of Milky Joe, for an excellent metaphysical thriller. (Julian Barratt, Noel Fielding, Matt Berry, Richard Ayoade)

Not to be missed is the brilliant Chris Morris’s NATHAN BARLEY, about a cretinous webmaster/filmmaker/dj and other “idiots” of his kind who mistake crass shock value for intelligent deconstruction, and a miserable magazine writer whose job keeps him in constant contact with these idiots. Really sharp satire that I’m sure people around here will enjoy. (Julian Barratt, Nicholas Burns, Richard Ayoade, Noel Fielding)

LOOK AROUND YOU: hysterically funny parody of the patronizing, lo-tech 70′s and 80′s science shows we all remember from childhood (they point to everything with pencils!) combined with outright absurdism. The music and computer-themed shows (eps 1/5) in series two are a lot of fun, but my fave is series one, especially the maths episode (S01E01). Also, I believe creator Peter Serafinowicz is Graham Linehan’s brother-in-law.

If you haven’t seen it before, I recommend Nathan Barley, which has Richard Ayoade in it as a side character, as well as Julian Barrat of mighty boosh fame and even noel fielding on occasion. It’s also written by Chris Morris. Quite a different form of humour, but absolutely fantastic.

I had also heard that there were going to be eight episodes for season two, but now I can’t remember where I heard it. The Channel 4 IT Crowd site makes it seem like there are only six episodes in season two.

I really like some of the British comedies already referenced but no conversation about contemporary British comedy would be complete without mentioning Mitchell & Webb. Peep Show is possibly the funniest sitcom I’ve ever seen. Their sketch comedy is hilarious. Even their movie Magicians was good.
