In shops this Christmas: a voice-changing human-Dalek hybrid fright-mask:
The mask, modelled on a one-eyed Dalek-human hybrid which appeared in the episode Daleks in Manhattan, changes the voice of the wearer to the metallic scream of the doctor's mortal enemies. Games based on films and TV characters will fill Santa's sack this year, according to toy manufacturers who made their annual prediction of Christmas best-sellers yesterday.

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

Hackers prepare for first "national holiday" in their honor

I can’t believe they took what must have been the worst mask/makeup of the season and turned it into a product.

  • Dan B.

Daleks in Manhattan was stinky, but a Dalek wearing a pinstripe suit was sufficiently absurd enough to sustain my interest in the two-parter.

if there isn’t atleast one Optimus Prime vs Dalek-Human Hyprid vid on YouTube before ’08, I’ll eat crow – or gosh, have to make it myself ;)

damn, _toy’s_ just keep getting cooler and cooler!

    SOCIAL INTERACTION WILL CEASE!

I agree with Samurai Gratz & KrisJohn. The new series and the 10th doctor are hands down my favorites of all time (started as a Who fan waaaay back in the Tom Baker years) but the Dalek’s in Manhattan episodes sucked. The voice acting (accents kept coming and going) was terrible, the plot was weak and it just wasn’t especially good.

Now if someone releases a full Dalek costume I’m all about it. Tooling down the road while screaming “EXTERMINATE” seems far more fun then being a one eyed tentacle monster.

I think these are in the shops already – saw one in Forbidden Planet in London at the weekend, so anyone who dreams of going to a Halloween party as Dalek Sec is in luck. I don’t know why you’d dream of that, though, because the Daleks Take Manhattan two-parter was dire.

  • Samurai Gratz

I LOVE the new Doctor Who, but the two Daleks in Manhattan episodes were absolute stinkers. Still, great mask.

  • Cpt. Tim

hey! that particular dalek had a human voice!

    error!

Man i’m a nerd. Anyways, two best episodes so far have been “the girl in the fireplace” and “blink”
Although i’m also currently making my way through every doctor who episode from the very beginning. If the episodes are the missing ones i’ll listen to the surviving audio. I”m estimating the task of watching 737 ish episodes to take about a year. I’m going to take notes and i’m considering writing about my year with the doctor.

    LOVE the new Doctor Who!

Must get this! Must figure out uses!
    EXTRAPOLATE EXTRAPOLATE!

Uh oh, that pic was taken with an older, cheaper digital camera!

    INTERPOLATE! INTERPOLATE!

ALMOST good enough to become a tentacle hentai monster!

  • Alden

I notice the dangly face phallic objects are substantially bigger than the ones on the prop in the show.

  • Samurai Gratz

Good point, Cpt. Tim – Dalek Sec didn’t have the traditional Dalek synthesized voice once he’d become the abomination above.

And I agree – “The Girl in the Fireplace” and “Blink” have been the two best episodes by far. Both were written, it should be noted, by the same person: Stephen Moffat. Rumor has it he would be likely be tapped to replace Russell T Davies should he decide to leave the show.

  • Patrick McNamara

They really need this in stores for Halloween, not Christmas. It’s not exactly something children are going to wear to church Christmas morning.

I’m sure there’s going to be those who haven’t been watching the new Dr. Who who are going to mistake it as a Cthulhu mask.
