Trailer for documentary about virtual worlds

Victor Piñeiro says: "Just wanted to share my first feature documentary trailer with you, Second Skin. Its all about virtual worlds and the gamers who 'live' in them." Link

  1. Looks like a pretty well-made documentary.

As a reformed World of Warcraft player, I can say this with certainty: the only way to win is not to play.

  2. Wow! *teehee* That really looks great. If the film is half as good as the trailer then it just made my top-10-to-see list… probably right after Darkon.

  3. wow – not only does this look like an incredibly great documentary, but it’s not 100% WOW-centric, and I have to say that I’m really happy about that. Some MMORPGs get lost in all the WOW hype.

And to Pork Musket – there *are* other ways to win…but it takes a lot of work to balance a real life and a pixelated one. A lot of times for me, the pixelated life wins, much to the dismay of the housework fairy.

  4. funny how 80% of ppl shown in this trailer are FAT, does this illustrate MMO community, or US population as a whole? sad in any case

btw I made a typo while filling out registration captcha and it passed me in, is this on purpose?

  5. I don’t like MMORPGs… People who drug into virtual world become losers in real life, in natural human relationsheeps, I think…
Don’t throw rocks at me )))

  6. Link is busted.

The film looks really interesting, and as a gamer I will definitely check it out. I am curious to see how much coverage is given to the “horror stories” (such as the man who admitted his addiction made him want to kill himself). I’m thinking that it will be handled with a bit more sensitivity than the standard “Oh my God, look at the freak nerd addicts” tack.

  7. ZZMEEY, have you ever played one? The crux of the game is forming and maintaining relationships, albeit over a digital interface.

  8. Never realized I was a loser.

Wife, 2 kids and good job (programmer).

    Played Everquest, Galaxies and WOW.

  9. I’m really interested now.

I think, though, it would be interesting to have a documentary that didn’t focus on just the hardcores (or to display that it’s a hardcore venue.) I am sure that there is a whipped fluff of many casuals that create constellations of networks through MMORPGs.

In fact, for me, some nights the MMORPG worlds are my graphical Instant Messengers. Weeknights, I might not spend more than 30 mins in there checking up on people.

Like Winkin, Blinkin, and Nod I spread my nets far and wide for all the stars I can pull into my hold.

  10. Looks really interesting. Hopefully it will give a good overview of the gaming community as a whole and not just focus on the negative aspects. Gaming is just like any interest, be it food, drink, sex, sports, work, exercise etc, everything in moderation. I play MMORPG’s as well as one and two person games with my husband, it’s a common interest and it has actually helped us in a lot of ways. Playing together (and with our friends and family) has taught us a lot about communication, tolerance, patience, team work etc. Just this past summer our 12 year old niece got into WoW and learned everything from how to work with others to how to balance a budget. We’re talking real world applications here. Lets hope this documentary will use an even hand and stress the point that in moderation gaming can be an ultimately healthy and beneficial use of our time.

  11. H3LLC4T, no, I heven’t, unfortunately… But any friends of mine do it. And this “hobby” done they unsociable, imho. But maybe I judge them strict, who knows…

    BQAGGIE87, thanks for recommendations ;)
