The Starry Rift, a new anthology of teen-oriented science fiction, comes out today. It's edited by Jonathan Strahan, and includes fiction by Neil Gaiman, Steven Baxter, Greg Egan, Jeffrey Ford, Gwyneth Jones, Kathleen Goonan, Ian McDonald, Kelly Link, Scott Westerfeld, Garth Nix, Walter Jon Williams and others -- including me (with my story Anda's Game).

The editor, Jonathan Strahan, did a fantastic job in pulling this together, and it couldn't come at a better time. Teen literature is peaking right now, and a high-quality anthology that introduces young people to authors they can plunge into for books and books and books is a timely and great idea.

Jonathan's giving away five copies of The Starry Rift to the first five young readers who write to him and name the last sf novel they loved and why. Link, Buy it on Amazon

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

#3 – Yes, another beautiful cover by Stephan Martiniere:

I’ve been a huge fan of his work for years and it’s always great to see his ultra-high quality artwork adorning another book cover.

Joaquin, send me a screenshot if you see them again.

Blueworld, thank you. It took me too long to find that old papperback!

Teresa, here is a link to a screen shot I took when I first saw it:

ll kddng sd, I just checked my local library, and they have a copy of this on order. I reserved it, and hope to slip it in my son’s direction this spring. Maybe I can show him something else interesting and move him away from his “Warriors” book.

You shoulda’ gotten Niven involved, then he could explain to kids about how illegal aliens are draining hospital resources and how you can fix it by spreading rumors in Spanish. then if Barnes was there Niven could say “Hey, I’m not a racist! I know a black dude! Back me up Steve, or we won’t collaborate on another Grendel book!”

I read a collection of stories in book called the Starry Rift. Is it an on-going series? I love the cover art. Very handsome.

  • Enochrewt

There’s too many good authors in this to restrict it to kids. I’ll go pick up a copy today.

  • Elorin

Sounds like a great addition to my library, and my daughter might enjoy (when she gets over reading Nancy Drew).

  • Anonymous

    Who did the cover art?

  • Jeff

Enochrewt, I would have to agree. I’d read it just to see how these authors speak to younger readers.

  • godwal

I read an advance copy of this and loved every page, not realizing it was intended for young humans. I probably would not have read it had I known. CD’s story Anda’s game was especially good. Great job!

The ads are still on the front page as of Friday morning. If someone knows a better way to prove this please let me know!

I recently returned from the Public Library Association Conference in Minneapolis and was able to buy this book from the publisher there as a gift for my 15 year old son. He devoured the book in 3 days over his spring break – he loved it!

  • blueworld

Jeff: There is also a collection of short stories by James Tiptree, Jr. called The Starry Rift.

  • joaquin

I know this is off topic, but am I really seeing SCIENTOLOGY ads on Boing Boing?!!? I never thought this site would accept money from a dangerous cult.
