Celebrity robot tee

I love this "robot celebrity" tee from ChopShop -- science fictiontastic! Link (via Gizmodo)

  1. Awesome shirt. I wish I could recognize more of them- clearly I need to get educated where it really matters. I do know that Daleks aren’t robots, though.

  2. hhhmmm….megaMAN is a robot?

though i am glad to see crow and tom servo making an appearance.

  3. The newest Marvin from the movie is on there, but I’m not seeing the BBC Marvin.
Am I missing him? Surely they can’t be so audacious as to have the movie one and not the original!

  4. Argh, no Big-O!

Still, it’s epic awesome that V.I.N.CENT and Maximillian are in there.

  5. @Santa’s Knee: Isn’t that Twiki on the top right?

I’m only confused about two or three of them; what an excellent thing. Now, to convince the wife of the same! ^_^

  6. Here are my guesses. Very roughly row by row, left to right, top to bottom (my notion of “row” may meander a bit):

    Astroboy
    Marvin (HHGTG)
    ?
    ?
    Hal? (2001: A Space Odyssey)
    V.I.N.CENT (The Black Hole)

    Wrong Trousers (Wallace & Grommit)
    ?
    Mazinger
    Tachikoma (Ghost in the Shell)
    Maximillian (The Black Hole)
    ?
    Dalek (Dr. Who)

  7. Oh, and I think the one under the cylon and left of Bender is Baron Karza (MicroNauts, toy)

  8. Very awesome, but it looks like their site is getting hammered so my impulse-purchase-must-have-shirt behavior is being denied!

  9. A couple more:

The dog robot at the top is K-9 (Dr Who) and the one above the dalek is Rosie the Maid (The Jetsons).

    Ok, I’ll shut up now.

  10. Awesome start, Mr. Pickles!

Here are the ones I recognized (roughtly in picklish order, though maybe not exactly)

    1. Astroboy
    2. Marvin the Paranoid Android (HHTG: The Movie)
    3. K-9 (Doctor Who)
    4. Huey (Silent Running)
    5. Dr. Theopolis (Buck Rogers) or HAL (hard to say)
    6. Vincent (Black Hole)
    7. ?
    8. ?
    9. Twiki (Buck Rogers)
    10. The Robot from Lost in Space
    11. Crow (MST3K)
    12. Johnny 5 / Number 5 (Short Circuit)
    13. Tripod robot from “War of the Worlds” (probably) or BBC Tripods series (unlikely)
    14. Wal*E
    15. Tom Servo (MST3K)
    16. Robby the Robot (Forbidden Planet)
    17. Robot from videogame “Berzerk”
    18. ?
    19. Rock-em Sock-Em Robot
    20. MechaGodzilla
    21. MegaMan
    22. Tin Woodsman (The Wizard of Oz)
    23. Robot from videogame “Robotron”?
    24. Cylon (old Battlestar Galactica)
    25. Marvin the Paranoid Android (BBC TV series of HHGTTG)
    26. ?
    27. Bubo? (Clash of the Titans)
    28. Sentinel (Matrix trilogy)
    29. R2D2
    30. ?
    31. Gort (The Day the Earth Stood Still)
    32. ?
    33. Bender (Futurama)
    34. Terminator
    35. C3PO
    36. ?
    37. Iron Giant
    38. Maria? (Metropolis)
    39. ? (maybe robot from Miyazaki’s Castle in the Sky?)
    40. Rose the Robot (Jetsons)
    41. Optimus Prime (Transformers)
    42. The Wrong Trousers (Wallace & Grommit)
    43. ED-209 (Robocop)
    44. That huge robot tank from Ghost in the Shell?
    45. The droids from Star Wars Episode 1
    46. ?
    47. ?
    48. Maxmillian (The Black Hole)– love taht they did him in evil-mode
    49. Unsure… maybe something Gundam
    50. ?
    51. Dalek (Dr. Who)

  11. Filling in some question marks…

The guy to the right of Vincent seems to be the robot from Pee Wee’s Playhouse, maybe?

Gigantor is to the right of the Bezerk Robot.

The middle guy facing Mecha Godzilla is a Rock’em Sock’em robot.

BBC-era Marvin is to the right of the ’76 Cylon, and I’d wager the the guy to his right is the Terminator, but I am not sure.

That’s Voltron to the right of Maximiliian, and B.O.B. (The Black Hole) to his right.

  12. Yah, MegaMAN shouldn’t be on there either. Guy in robotic suit doesn’t equate Robot to me.

By that thinking the Dalek shouldn’t be on there either.

But cool shirt. Totally must own.

  13. R2D2 is just northeast of the Matrix Sentinel in the center, C3PO is 2 robots southwest of the Sentinel.

  14. R2 and Threepio are there.

As for the inclusion of a Dalek, I’m thinking that’s an outgroup.

Who is the long-legged tripod one in the middle?

  15. @ #18
    Both are in there.

Rusty the Boy Robot is the one on the outside ring, about 1 O’ Clock, to the left of Servo and Twiki. I think Big Guy is directly under Crow’s left elbow.

Tranzor Z is opposite Voltron (sorry animeists, I only know the US cartoons) on the bottom, flanking Maximilian from Black Hole.

    I think that’s a Terminator between Bender and C3PO.

  16. Megaman IS a robot, not a guy in a suit. All of the Robot Masters from all of the games have the word “man” in their name.

Geez! Bone up on your Megaman lore, people!

  17. @Pipenta–I think the tripod robot in the middle is from Spielberg’s remake of ‘War of the Worlds’.

  18. Exterminate, exterminate, exterminate.

#19 I’m impressed, not sure that’s something to brag about. Pretty impressive though.

  19. Robot 44 in the list is from GitS, but its not the big spider tank, its a Tachikoma from the animated series GitS:Stand Alone Complexi

  20. Wow. Just wow. I REALLY like this design, for a shirt or poster or anything really. I know there a lot of inconsistencies what with the inclusion of androids & mechanical suits but I must have one anyway & it makes me sad that the host website is down. I’ll have to check back.

I love that it not only includes a Martian Fighthing Machine from H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds, but it’s from a 100+ year old French edition of the book. Granted, the fighting machine is more like one of our tanks, but Wells did describe them as mechanical bodies that are worn as needed for the task at hand, making them more like androids than anything else.

  22. Not sure if there’s any clever way to include an image, but I put a version of the image with index numbers for reference here.

Based on that index, here’s what people have so far– question marks for any that I can’t yet confirm.

    1. Astroboy
    2. Marvin (Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy (Recent Film))
    3. K-9 (Dr. Who)
    4. Huey (or Dewey or Louie… can you tell them apart?) (Silent Running)
    5. HAL (2001)… probably.
    6. Vincent (The Black Hole)
    7. Conky 2000 (Pee Wee’s Playhouse)
    8. Rusty the Boy Robot (Big Guy)
    9. Twiki (Buck Rogers)
    10. Model B-9 Environmental Control Robot (Lost in Space)
    11. Crow (MST3K)
    12. Number 5 (Short Circuit)
    13. War of the Worlds?
    14. WAL*E
    15. Tom Servo (MST3K)
    16. Robbie the Robot (Forbidden Planet)
    17. Robot Bad Guy (Video Game: Berzerk (1980))
    18. Big Guy (Big Guy)
    19. ?
    20. Rock-Em Sock-Em Robot (Toy)
    21. MechaGodzilla
    22. MegaMan
    23. Tin Woodsman (The Wizard of Oz)
    24. Robot Bad Guy (Robotron)?
    25. Cylon (Original BSG)
    26. Marvin (BBC TV Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy)
    27. Bubo? (Clash of the Titans)
    28. Sentinel (Matrix)
    29. R2D2 (Star Wars)
    30. ?
    31. Gort (The Day the Earth Stood Still)
    32. ?
    33. Bender (Futurama)
    34. Terminator (Terminator)
    35. C3PO (Star Wars)
    36. ?
    37. The Iron Giant (The Iron Giant)
    38. Maria (Metropolis)
    39. Centurion? (new BSG)
    40. Rosie (The Jetsons)
    41. Optimus Prime (Transformers)
    42. The Wrong Trousers (Wallace & Grommit)
    43. ED-209 (Robocop)
    44. Tranzor Z / Mazinger Z?
    45. Tachikoma? (Ghost in the Shell) — very unsure on this one
    46. Voltron (Voltron)
    47. Droideka (Star Wars Eps 1-3)
    48. Dalek (Dr. Who)
    49. Dr. Theopolis (Buck Rogers)
    50. Maximilian (The Black Hole)
    51. Muffit? (original BSG)

  23. The bird robot to the upper left of the Sentinel is probably Bubo the mechanical owl from Clash of the Titans.

  24. @#19 (naltrexone)
I think 49. is Voltron, definitely not a Gundam.

And I agree with #11 (angrypaladin), I was surprised by the lack of a megadeus!

Although a few references are left out (where’s the Metal Gear?) I think they covered a good majority.

  25. And number 45 (according to the nifty chart) does indeed seem to be a Tachikoma, which, btw, rocks :)

  26. Awesome, thanks for the confirmations! I’ll post a final listing once folks fill in the gaps and confirm the question-marks.

  27. The Tin Woodsman is actually a cyborg — according to the Baum books, he was a human who replaced all his body parts with tin.

    REALLY want this shirt.

  28. The artist did a magnificent job of rendering all of the robotic icons I am familiar with, except Bender. Bender’s silhouette is more evil, menacing and likely to cut you than the lovable if out-of-control rascal I know. I wonder if the artist self-censored the obvious cigar or beer bottle to keep it rated G? Or maybe that’s not Bender at all.

  29. Naltrexone, that is a Tachikoma on your #45.
Also think that, for some reason, Ultra Man is #30. Dunno why he’d be in there. Then again, they put in Astro Boy and Mega Man, so why not him?

  30. Number 39 is absolutely a Cylon Centurion from the new BSG. You can remove the question mark. I wondered why it took so long to identify, it’s instantly recognizable.

Some of the other recognitions y’all have made are astounding.

  31. Where is Small Wonder?
where are the robots from Heart Beeps?
Where is Benji from that movie where he was a robot?

  32. pretty sure #18 is not Big Guy, but Gigantor (the shape of the eyes and spindlier legs)

confirmed #45 as Tachikoma, as well as #30 as Ultraman. weren’t the Droideka referred to, in the movies, as “Destroyer Droids?”

Also, please don’t refer to Mazinger Z as Tranzor Z ::sigh:: bleh. ^_~

  33. Heh – their site is totally buggered.

Maybe protocol/etiqette should be that BoingBoing writers give commercial sites like this a few days’ warning of an upcoming blog entry, so they can upgrade their servers/pipe.

  34. #45, why would they not include astroboy? He’s a robot. And as someone else pointed out, so is MegaMan..

  35. zanbowser: I believe they were actually called droideka in the movies. The problem was that the name was said with that horrible accent so it was hard to make out. At least, that’s what it seemed like when I saw it on TV recently.

As for number 24, I don’t think it’s from Robotron. Unfortunately, I can’t place which video game it’s from.

  36. @Mr Pickles: Looks like that link doesn’t work, guess they don’t outside links to images. Here’s the link to the Micronauts page instead. http://www.toymania.com/columns/spotlight/s1micronauts.shtml

The head looks like Karza’s, but the legs are wrong. Since the parts were interchangable, it could be a cross of Karza’s head and Force Commander’s body, since Force Commanders legs look correct for the picture.

  37. Oh wait, all I saw was the centaur type image of Karza. In the other images of Karza he looks correct.

  38. A couple others I would like to see on the shirt are Box from Logan’s Run(totally forgot about him), the spider bots from Runaway and one of the little space ship robots from Batteries not Included.

  39. This is too cool.

I dont think that #32 is Baron Karza, I think it’s Dr. Satan’s robot, from the old serials. Also, I think #30 is Jet Jaguar, from Godzilla vs Megalon, he’s kinda too puffy for Ultraman. The game the #17 robot is Berzerk. “get the humanoid, get the intruder”

  40. Speaking of what “should or shouldn’t be on there”– HAL 9000 isn’t really a “robot” but a computer. He may have an eye (or many eyes in various parts of the ship) but he has no body really.

Still, nice design . . . YOU NERDS!!!

    49. Dr. Theopolis (Buck Rogers)
    50. Maximilian (The Black Hole)
    51. Muffit (original BSG)

  42. My first instinct was that #24 in the index image was an Enforcer from Robotron, but at least one person disputes this.

I’m not 100% sure– it’s not pixel-for-pixel and when you’re dealing with a 16×16 sprite, it’s easy to have similar looking robots… but I did dig up an image of some here, so I’d welcome additional opinions. (Or obviously other suggestions of what it might be.

I suspect Stevezilla is right about #30 being Jet Jaguar, so I’ll put it in the list with a question mark but would like additional confirmation.

ANY leads at all on #19 or #36?

  44. #19 is Bomberman!
I’m sure of it… the stretched oval eyes, the rounded pill shaped head with a squat body. Plus, my suspicions were confirmed by his origin:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bomberman
Essentially, any Bomberman who makes it to the surface from the underground factory is granted a wish, and the protagonist wants to use the wish to become a human.

  45. I don’t think 19 is Bomberman. I’ve seen a modern rendering of the shape we see on the graphic. In my mind’s eye, he’s smooth and white.

  46. @#78 (UBERCHET)
Yeah, the modern Bomberman is smooth and white:
    http://www.dsfanboy.com/media/2006/05/bomberman.JPG

The #19 in the picture is also symmetrically opposite to #22 megaman– and since there are similar pairings throughout the design, I can only assume #19 is Bomberman, another video game robot character.

    Anyway,
I think STEENKINBADGERS is right about #36.

  47. Wow, SteenkinBadgers… I think you’re dead-on. Awesome call. I’d totally forgotten that album cover until you mentioned it.

Uberchet: I seriously considered #19 being Bomberman earlier, and Versh is right about the designer using some thematic symmetry. What stopped me is that every image of Bomberman I’ve ever seen has the small sphere at the top of his head. I get that if he angled his head right you wouldn’t see it, so there’s a good chance it is him. But I was also assuming he was a human in a suit instead of an ex-robot. I’m going to pencil him in with a question mark and just ask for others to confirm or offer alternatives.

    Thanks!

  49. Ulysis, this quote from the original product page (I think), which appeared in the comments at Gizmodo, clears the issue:

“CORRECTIONS: The newly reprinted version of this design has had two amendments. The previous version included one character which has been determined to not be a robot at all. The previous version also included a robot dog that virtually nobody recognized. This character was swapped out with a new robot figure. These changes are reflected in the detailed image below.”

  50. Hmmmm. Finally I was able to check out the store. One shirt with tax is $35.50. For a T-shirt. Yikes. As awesome as this is I’m going to pass for now & see if the price eventually drops. I’d still like a high resolution version of the shirt image.

  51. I hope that K-9 is not removed in the new version.

Would have liked to have seen Fooly Cooly’s Kanchi/Canti in there somewhere.

  52. Where’s Woody Allen’s haywire Robo-Butler from “Sleeper”? (And it would suit the Black/White motif of the shirt very nicely…)

    Yul Brynner’s “Gunfighter” from “Westworld”?

And yeah, Vorear, “Robot Monster” woulda been perfect. Bored guy hanging around the set gets stuffed into a cheap gorilla suit and a fish bowl with rabbit ears for a head, waves his arms around and bumps into stuff. Sweet.

There MUST have been SOME way to get a Stepford Wife in there, but What the Hell…….they had to draw the line somewhere…..

  53. Maybe this was posted already, but did anyone see the Goatse reference in the middle of the “Internets” version?

Go here and page dwon, til u get to “Internets”..

    Ugh..

  54. Could #19 be Haro, the pet robot from Mobile Suit Gundam? It’s the only other spherical robot that I know of.

  55. #64 & #76 are both right.

This is a blatant and near-criminal rip-off of designs already done around a similar theme by Super 7.

What’s really sad is that not only is this a total copycat, the design of this tee is TERRIBLE in comparison to what Super 7 did.

This is practically as bad as Todd Goldman’s ripoff of that Schmorky cartoon.
JUST SAY NO TO DESIGN THEFT!

  56. Nonsense Pickles, you can’t copyright “a bunch of ____ on a T-shirt”. Besides, the Super 7 designs are of spaceships and monsters. The design isn’t even close since the Super 7 T-shirts mirror the outlines horizontally. No design theft here. Chill.

  57. Eh, I coughed up the lung for the robot shirt, what the heck, already spent a ton of money on new computer equipment this weekend. :) I’d be tempted to get the alien shirt if it didn’t cost so much. 1 for $30 is a bit high, 2 for 40 or maybe 45, I’d have bit on.

  58. I guess this was never answered: the figure that Jet Jaguar replaced on the original shirt appears to be Megalon (Jet Jaguar’s primary antagonist). Megalon is an arthropod, not a robot. The star-shaped antenna and Chrylser building arms in the silhouette are a dead giveaway.

I thought #45 was a spider droid from Clone Wars, but I see I was mistaken.

Also, I am stylin’ in my new black WeRobot tee. ;)

  59. @NOEN

Where did I suggest that the idea was copyrighted? One can easily rip off a design while remaining just out of the scope of copyright infringement.

But if you can’t see the blatant similarities you need to get your eyes examined. This isn’t a case of simultaneous discovery, it’s a case of someone seeing a design and then slightly altering it and reselling it.

Beyond that, I doubt that the makers of this shirt have obtained the licenses to reproduce likenesses of the robots in question. Disney and Lucas are both notorious for keeping tight control over their characters and sending out flurries of CAD notices to folks who use them without permission.

  60. I think it’s funny to accuse them of ripping off super7store while ignoring the obvious fact that both companies sell shirts that intend to profit off of copywritten characters that don’t belong to them.

Not that it stopped me from buying the robot shirt, but none of those shirts would stand up to a copyright infringement suit.

  61. i am the one who made the design.

if you follow the portfolio of our site you can actually see the process that led to the silhouetted robots tee. in 2004 we made “desk jockey” and always liked the idea of doing a “junk” tee with a bunch of related stuff on it. This year we did “the internets” collection tee featuring a bunch of internet memes – then we decided to do another and chose robots. since these borrow from pop-culture references we decided on silhouettes for obvious reasons and the symmetry comes from pairing up characters that are related in some way – either by history, personality, shape or some shared something (most people don’t pick up on that).

if had to claim any real inspiration for the idea it would have to be this old poster from HOUSE (http://www.houseind.com/include/getimage.php?id=741) which i had remembered seeing years ago and thinking it really looked great to see all those sils on a single poster like an old sticker set.

anyway, it is what it is and people can and will think what they like.

beyond all this… thank you boingboing for the post. it was fun.
