Printcrime in Filipino and European Portuguese

Friday's post announcing that a fan named Eduardo Mercer had translated my story Printcrime into Brazilian Portuguese sparked two more translations; Luis Filipe Silva translated the story into European Portuguese and Paul Pajo translated it into Filipino. I'm particularly excited about the Filipino translation; I think it might be the first story of mine to be translated into Filipino! Filipino fan-translation European Portuguese fan-translation

  his tagalog translation is too passive-voiced. i’d take a shot at it but i’m too lazy :P and don’t even get me started on this filipino/tagalog debacle.

  Well, whether it’s correct or not, “Filipino” is used colloquially to refer main to Tagalog since it’s the most-spoken dialect in the Philippines. Then again, it’s not nearly widespread enough to warrant the name, so it’s easier to take the wishy-washy route and try not to think too much about it.

  The Tag translation looks good to me, and it’s certainly simple enough for us casual speakers in the city. Still, it had me going for a dictionary to look up “ngisi”. Turns out it’s a word and not just a typo of “ngiti”. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna blast me some Eraserheads.

  to #14 – thanks for reading it and even looking up “ngisi” hahaha – after you listened to Eraserheads why don’t you try to give Filipino triphop/drum & bass and electronica a try? Check out Drip, it’s the first Filipino band that has released a FULL album under a CREATIVE COMMONS license (by-nc-sa) :) I’m sure Cory “The Copyfighter” Doctorow would approve.

  If I was the Chinese goverment I would’ve put them on a plane the same day I arrested them. Drawing it out like this has not served the goverment well and has done more to highlight their poor human rights record than any number of LED protest stunts.

  I congratulate Paul Pajo for his translation effort. Although, I found a lot of errors in his work. I’ll try to translate it or better yet, I’ll ask an English-Filipino translator I personally know to do it. You don’t have to post it if you don’t want to, I just want you to have another translation version, one that I am confident to share with you.

  Tagalog is spoken in the Philippines.

  Several languages are spoken in the Philippines, not just Tagalog. (My family there speaks Ilocano.) But “Filipino” is a nationality or an ethnicity, not a language.

  Nice to see fans translating Printcrime into their respective languages!

  Filipino IS the national language of the Philippines, although it’s largely based on Tagalog – check out the National Commission on the Filipino Language (Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino). The country has over a hundred languages and dialects, though – not surprising for an archipelago with over 7,100 islands. Indonesia has even more (languages and islands, that is!)

  Hi Cory,

  Thanks for the shout-out. I’ve corrected some of the errors – I was doing the translation in the wee hours. Filipino IS the national language in the Philippines. According to Ethnologue, it’s “based on Tagalog with the inclusion of terms from other regional languages”. It’s easier for me to translate into Filipino than into pure Tagalog as that would have necessitated some neologistic acrobatics on my part.

  i am well aware that portugese is spoken in both portugal and brazil… but my point is that it should be portugese and brazillian portugese, not this nonsense.

  I understand. But I’m Portuguese and I think that Brazil has earned its right a long time ago to be recognized as having a culture and language dynamics all of their own. I don’t mind speaking “European” Portuguese – because that’s what it is, really. Suppose every Portuguese person would vanish from the face of the Earth (not a long time to wait given our current birth rate), what would Brazilians speak then? :)
