When I was 5 or 6, my older brother (age 16) ordered a baby Great Horned Owl from the back of a comic book. My parents found out when there was a call from the airport to "come and pick up your owl!" He lived with us for several months, eating raw hamburger off a moving stick, then live mice. Eric the owl did not adapt well to domesticity and eventually was released into the wild.

The best part, is that Johnson Co. is still around (the 2 big full pages full of crap to buy).

http://www.johnsonsmith.com/

I remember looking through all that crap when I was younger thinking how cool a lot of it would be.

Unfortunately, I haven't come across Dean Studios (the mini animals ads)

That monkey helped me stop the fellows from kicking sand in my face! Together, we manned the hovercraft bought from the back of Amazing Stories, learned deadly self-defense arts, and went on to fight crime utilizing hypno-coins and x-ray specs!

I've wanted one of those little monkeys since I was a kid... my mom told me I could buy one when I was an adult, but when I became an adult I could no longer find the ads.

My tragic life.

If you read the offer, you get the monkey if you hand out twenty adverts for the company's photo coloring service.

Let's say that the offer requires that the coupons that the young sucker hands out actually get used. They bring in "49 cents and a few pennies for our COD service."

So the company is going to get maybe ten dollars.

This is enough money to justify them to send out a live animal?

Either they had all sorts of loopholes to justify not sending out a monkey ("sorry kid, we're all out . . . here's a baby possum instead"), or they had a supply of amazingly cheap monkeys.
