I paused it and pulled the cue point with my cursor slowly. She's not showing more than 1/10th of the work involved.

She's one of the artists I watch on dA and her illustrations for Julie Black Belt are fantastic.

Cheers for that cool video!

The video takes way too long to load, but let me just say I'm glad she's not using bloody Photoshop.

It loaded, finally. However, I think that took much more than 60 minutes. I want to watch it in real time.

i too would like to see a real time video or at least a break down in html format with screenshots and descriptions.

is she using a clipping mask or pathfinder when making the shadows and highlights? i can't tell. i would assume a clipping mask as you can do that with keyboard shortcuts and i don't see the pathfinder window open.

seems pretty straightforward, though. this is how i would probably do it.

although i used photoshop and my wacom to color it, i used illustrator to do the base line art. i love the pathfinder tool.

Awesome. I'd love to see a real time version as well, with a voice track of what is being done and why.

PITA that it won't play till the whole thing is downloaded, but you know, that's really just a niggle.

I wonder what made her flip the artwork, readjust the facial features, then flip everything back.

I've been following Charlene on dA for a few years now - not only is she a very talented illustrator, she's also a cool person.

Shrdlu, I use Illustrator as my primary medium and I can assure you that she's showing the whole process from start to finish - but highly time-lapsed. As the title card notes, the actual piece took a little over an hour, while the video is a bit over four minutes.

Once you know Illustrator well, a lot of this comes naturally. I have done pieces of a similar level of complexity in about the same timeframe.
