Maybe it serves the conservative impulse to purity:

Myself, I prefer SwamiSalt. Blessed by the Mahatma himself.

Re: JIMP

There are certain people who have a need to get defensive and upset over their religion, to the point that they see demons everywhere and will misinterpret things to show that they are being persecuted. The Christian salt guy is one example, and Jesus-Is-My-Pirate is another.

Is JIMP annoyed with bias in general, or just against Christianity? For example, does he care about anti-Muslim bias? How about anti-atheist bias? I have never met a Christian who didn't have a bias against atheism or agnosticism, and most of the ones I've met had strong biases against other religions. So who's better here?

I personally think "blessed" anything is silly. Blessed salt reminds me too much of the Catholic church selling "indulgences", which was one of the catalysts for the Reformation, and that was for fund raising too.

Xaxa @47- I certainly hope not. I always thought rock salt was the mixture of salt and sand which they mine in Cheshire and put on roads in the winter.

As for Kosher/non-kosher salt- as posters above have said, kosher salt is so called because its large grains make it good for removing blood from meat, and Jewish dietary laws prohibit the consumption of blood.
Only animal products can be treyf (non-Kosher). However, other food can be made non-Kosher in certain circumstances- such as if they're mixed with something that isn't (bacon-flavoured salt), they come into contact with certain sorts of vermin, or (and this is the good bit) they have been sacrificed to idols.

And the "kosher certification" of the ingredients is to ensure mostly that the first 2 circumstances don't apply.

I'd say that the ignorance behind the understanding of the nature of kosher salt here is amazing, but that's actually beside the point. This is a brilliant idea from a marketing standpoint. Can something be both moronic and brilliant?

from the article: Godlewski makes his aim clear--"There's no anti-Semitism. I love Jesus Christ and he was a Jew."

Ooo, there's the kiss of death. Christians who do and say blatantly anti-Semitic things invariably follow it up with the I-love-Jesus-and-he-was-a-Jew defense.

@Oskar:

I would like to make it clear that "Kosher salt" is just as big of a rip-off as "Christian salt" (surely they cost more).

My 3 lb box of Diamond Kosher salt was $2.95. My 1 lb box of regular ol' iodized salt was $0.95. The Kosher salt 3 cents/lb more. That not much of a scam...

That aside, many people can certainly taste the iodine. As to whether it cures goiter -- we already get enough iodine as it is here in the West. IF you're going to be exporting salt to malnourished populations, though, well then don't send the Kosher salt. Better for us if we don't give it all away anyway...

I'm Catholic, with E.European parents. We have a tradition involving salt. When you move to a new home your parents give you a gift of blessed salt and bread as a hope that you will be happy and healthy in your new house. It doesn't matter what kind of salt it is though.

Mormons had their own salt for a while- non of the other brands would acknowledge it as salt and most stores refused to shelve it on the spice aisle. You could usually find it with the artificial sweeteners.

For extra lulz, try reading the article this way: wherever there's a quote from Mr. Godlewski, imagine it as spoken by Bo and Marshal from Absolutely Fabulous.

TGJERUSALEM
While the Episcopalians are usually quite sane and reasonable for the Godflocks, they do have their nutters, including some secessionist priests ande even a few bishops. (The Bishop for Illinois (who is still pissed about women taking part in the liturgy and women being ordained) and the one from Texas who wants to leave the AM ANG Communion over Gene Robinson's gayness loom large in my thoughts.) The weak central authority of the Anglican model of churches means, in the US at least, they mostly have a decent compassionate leadership, but they do get and keep some screwballs.

Cory's casual anti-Christian bigotry bugs me, too*, but really, this notion of "Christian salt" is just silly and deserves to be mocked.
