The "Eye-Pod" from Steam Gear Lab incorporates a hidden gen-1 iPod Nano and is a work of sheer genius:
The "eye-Pod" can be worn on the wrist via the leather cuff, or placed on its custom Victrola base.

All functionality of the iPod remain intact an a hidden USB cord retracts from the base to either a wall charger or your computer. There are hidden pressure plates that when touched send a strobing "static charge" into the quartz crystals on either side of the magnified viewing portal.

Steam Gear Lab has broken the chains of small electronics obsolescence. Behold! The Eye-Pod Victrola! (Thanks, SMarks!)

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

The technology that links taxonomy and Star Trek

    Moriarty, I’ll work on that!

  • Doctor Grymm

Wow we went from iPods to Literature, real fast, LOL

  • trippcook

This is shockingly similiar to a project I designed with a Sandisk Sansa. Eh, Creative Commons, share and share alike, right?

  • redrichie

    Haha…nice.

Here, can anybody recommend some really good steampunk novels? I liked The Difference Engine and have read some short stories, some good, some less so…but amn’t that sure where to go next.

  • redrichie

    Hehe, Grymm…sorry! My bad!

  • Prof_Gauthier

    Red –

There is a great collection edited by Jeff Vandermeer – Amazon

Also, Paul Difillipo wrote The Steampunk Trilogy which stands as a cornerstone of the genre in my opinion.

  • Itsumishi

I believe that Trippcook could possibly be “taking the piss”. Just a possibility.

  • Doctor Grymm

Sorry, mate, I don’t see the similarity beyond the rectangle shape… and the MP3 Player.

  • redrichie

I *may* have read the Vandermeer collection. Shall check out the Difillipo one, though. Wasn’t aware of that.

    Cheers!

  • Doctor Grymm

Sorry, Tripp, I don’t see the similarity beyond the rectangle shape… and the MP3 Player. There are several MP3 Steampunk mods out there, notably Molly Porkshank’s design. Mine was inspired my Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

And no worries, Redrichie, I was going to suggest The Time Machine and Journey to the center of the Earth, M’self.

    Doctor G.

  • Sethum

I like your creativity Tripp, but I don’t think “steampunk-ifying” an mp3 player as a general concept is something copyright would cover anyway. Your design seems to have much less eyeball.

  • Anonymous

Redrichie, you’ll probably want to look into Jules Verne and H. G. Wells novels, which are at the heart of any steampunk-fans collection. And, not a novel per se, but I’m pretty sure you’ll enjoy Girl Genius, which you can find online.

The eye should be motion tracking.
