For those of us who are not aware of the connection between Sunshine Press and wiki leaks, can somebody please explain?

The url points to : [[88.80.13.160]] i.e. http://sunshinepress.org/sunshinepress

The paypal donations go to: donations@sunshinepress.org

Kinda confused.

Yeah, I'd love to give money to Wikileaks, but there's no way I'm giving money to some guy with an IP address.

Can some reputable organization like the EFF create a fund? Or, failing that, can several known people authenticate this and explain why they think the money will actually turn into better Wikileaks service?

Wikileaks (and Wikipedia) don't need more donations they need to
off-load the burden of hosting the data to clients. They need to use
distributed (P2P) caches and data stores. A centralized system for
such popular non-profit sites is not sustainable.

Distributed P2P data stores and HTTP caches already exist they just
need to be aware of them and get people to use them.

I know we're supposed to hate the old media around here, but at least they had the income to pay for libel lawyers and FOIA lawyers. I'm afraid that Wikileaks is even less sustainable than the dead-tree editions of the major newspapers.

I find myself somewhat ambivalent about Wikileaks after some of the stuff they've tried to pull—like trying to auction some leaks off to the highest bidder rather than post them openly on their site. If they're going to be an open-leaks site, then for goodness' sake they should leak everything openly.

Well I've donated, and I'm going to make it a monthly habit to donate. I inquired as to whether they had considered setting up a monthly donation scheme, as other charitable organizations have, but they replied that even that was beyond their means. Although electronic banking through my bank allows this sort of scheduled money sending, I don't really know what other possibilities are available. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than myself could chime in with some advice on this subject.

Love it, donating now.

If you want to see a video of the wikileaks team themselves, here's the video of them at 25C3:

I have not been shocked at the lack of government support for Julian Assange, after

all our government failed David Hicks (yes a different brand but still our

government).

However, I have been shocked that Julia Gillard, a person who I believed was above

reproach in any matter appears to have come out on the side of some red necks in

the USA and condemn an Australian citizen without even having him interviewed by a

consulate member.

I have written a song that will hopefully support Julian Assange financially, it is

called, 'We can't trust the government' and is available for download on an honour

system at gregoryjround.com I pledge 50% of any download sales to wikileaks and

Julian Assange and I have contacted Julian's London Lawyer to informed him of this.

His reply was "Thankyou..."

My site also carries a music drama album based on the David Hicks book, 'Guanatanamo....'

Some governments or courts have blocked DNS lookups of wikileaks.org in the past - and may still be doing it. Other than using alternate DNS servers, the only way to get around this is to use a raw IP address.

I've been pointing my browser to Wikileaks at 88.80.13.160 for about two years now. It had been blocked for a short while by my ISP's DNS server, for some reason at the time... I'd forgotten what the URL for Wikileaks is/was. D'oh!

This IP address is the address returned by a whois lookup - it's a computer in Sweden. It's good to know in case Wikileaks is 'disappeared' again.

Can some reputable organization like the EFF create a fund?

Wikileaks isn't reputable enough for you? It's not like they're some upstart site that has done nothing to earn your trust:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_Julius_Baer_vs._Wikileaks_lawsuit

Wikileaks (and Wikipedia) don't need more donations they need to
off-load the burden of hosting the data to clients.

I think they do. The problem is that no-one else does. So when SlashDot links to their website, it still goes down.
But if you have expertise in that sort of area, I'm sure the wikileaks guys are thankful for any help.

If they're going to be an open-leaks site, then for goodness' sake they should leak everything openly.

Yeah, that was pretty dodgy. In their defense they tried it only once, and did not offer permanent exclusive access, just exclusivity for a limited time before it was posted openly and freely for everyone.

To confirm, Sunshine Press is and always has been another name for Wikileaks - it's the same place. They also use a bunch of other names to get round url blocks, but Sunshine Press is the most official.

@ Robotech_Master:

"I find myself somewhat ambivalent about Wikileaks after some of the stuff they've tried to pull—like trying to auction some leaks off to the highest bidder rather than post them openly on their site."

You're not legally obligated to make a donation. I would suggest that Wikileaks is one of the most important sites around, if only for leaking the Gitmo (Camp Delta) SOP in its entirety.

Sure, auctioning off data is questionable. I thought the same thing when a stag reel featuring Marilyn Monroe was auctioned off. As expected, the millionaire who bought it refuses to make the film public. If authentic, that film is historically significant, and until I see it for myself it's a crime against humanity.

This guy made several claims as fact that put a rather sharp point on what he had to say. The question is how does a person authenticate his claims? I don't know where to start.

It's not that I don't think it could be true, Its the fact that I don't know its true.

One thing that is certain.

The media today has let everyone down.

A restricted version of what should have been news now released as 'leak'. If one closely observes, the leaks are not actually harmful to the interest of the elites running USA. The leaks are tactically used to deliberately leak information ultimately to protect vested interests of the governing elites of that country.
Further, such leaks will soon become justification for further secrecy and further monitoring of the citizens of US and other humans elsewhere.
Moreover, through rising sentiments the media and the administration has created a convoluted patriotism, by which citizens are conditioned to invite stricter monitoring of themselves, and totally protected top secrets. While this is done, freedom is only ensured to the military-industrial-speculative-corporate-complex.
Indeed in real democracy, to the degree to whic it is real, there will be less state secrecy, less monitoring or spying citizens/ non-citizens and the interests of the people will be seriously considered.

@Spazzm

I'm happy to give the money to Wikileaks to improve their service. I'm not happy to go to some IP address with a generic form and send money in the hope that it a) ends up in the hands of somebody at Wikileaks, and b) then gets used for something positive.

Honestly, I'd rather just give them bandwidth and replication, but if they want cash, they need to ask for it in a way that doesn't look totally dodgy.
