MGS3 is my favorite in the series, but I definitely see where you're coming from. Having played all the Metal Gear Solid games to completion, I can tell you there's a lot of stuff you might miss out on, having not played 1 and 2--For about where you are in the game by now I'm assuming 4-7 hours in, at the most), the largest of these is the juxtaposition of Revolver Ocelot as a brash young man (as you see him in MGS 3) and as an older man in MGS, MGS2 and MGS4.

While there are certainly gripes regarding MGS, it is still one of my favorite series of all time--but definitely not the series for you if cutscenes bother you ;)

It looks like a high-tech version of those stupid old hand-held Streetfighter games that give you very little game control and you just tap buttons and hit people.

Yesterday I started playing "Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater" which was my very first introduction to the series. I like the gameplay but found the endless cut scenes and dialogue segments drawn-out and cheesy. (Just getting to the opening credits takes about 2 hours!)

Hearing Kojima's statement that he originally wanted to make movies actually goes a long way toward explaining how all that stuff got in there.
