Stagueve sez, "Ben Heck just finished his new project, a gorgeous Commodore 64 Laptop:"
This project somehow has the distinction of being both the longest and fastest portable electronics project I have ever done. I originally started making a C64 laptop in the fall of 2006, and kept pecking away at it every so often. Finally, a few weeks ago, I said "screw it" and started over.
This looks like it could come in handy – the Jackery Jewel is a MFU-certified Lightning-to-USB charging cable with a built-in 450 mAh battery. It’s $16 on Amazon with promo code JERJEWEL. I just ordered one.
Really, Thinkgeek’s $150 Star Trek White Noise Sleep Machine does it all: projects a moving starfield on your ceiling, plays starship-like white noise loops while you drift off, presents a goofily plausible UI and form-factor straight out of the Roddenverse, and can even play the red alert klaxon as its alarm-tone.
I’ve had the Plugable 5-Port 36W USB Universal Smart Charger for over a year. I take it with me on all trips, including business and family travel. Having five USB ports means I can charge everyone’s phones and a battery at the same time. Instead of plugging directly into the wall outlet, the charger has […]
If you’ve ever tried to quickly share a file with someone, you know there’s nothing actually quick about it. Between permissions, log-in credentials, size limitations, and download issues, it’s a miracle if you’re ever able to share the document at all. That’s why we think Droplr Pro is so essential.Droplr Pro lets you quickly, easily, and […]

Did he suggest that his six year old hands were more nubile? Nice laptop nonetheless.
I’m impressed by his laptop systems, but I wonder why there’s always a thick loop of wire running out the back to the monitor? Isn’t there a way to internalize that? (note: I have no clue) I’d be afraid of someone thinking it was a handle.
Best thing ever!! I want one!
i think i would get one just to play “Impossible:Mission” or maybe even “Hacker”.
the music is starting to make me tear up… i must go.
This is what Commodore should have done back in 1984 or so.
Ubercool! (In need of a time machine)
I’d happily trade my MacBook for that!
Finally, a demo video with entertaining narration as well.
Love the narration.
and now he need to make more of those. if he keeps it to just one he will prob be killed by jealous C64 hackers.
Did Ben Heck describe his wrists at 6 years old as “nubile?”
Those Atari joysticks suck. Get a Wico! (Also, this is fucking awesome.)
LOAD “*”,8,1
Oh, my childhood!
This brings me back. Want!!!
It’s an original Commodore 64 computer plus an emulated Commodore 1541 disk drive (the “1541-III“). I was fascinated by how the 1541-III lets you access the different disk images on the SD card using valid C64 LOAD commands.
I had never seen LOAD”$5”,8 before, but after reading more about Commodore DOS, I can see how it’s a logical extension.
Hey whippersnappers, that’s *cload* to you. This is truly a hack in every sense of the word. Using an original C64 board seems too backward for my tastes, and I wonder why this wasn’t used instead; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C64_Direct-to-TV
“…a few weeks ago, I said ‘screw it’ and started over.”
You sound like a programmer.
Damn what a nostalgi trip that was, i might dig out my C-64 from my closet, and have a nice evening with some nostalgy games….
Badass. I spent way too many hours sitting in front of my C64.
I have a Commodore Executive SX-64 Laptop I’d like to get rid of–I mean sell. It works–A light goes on. I’m in Los Angeles and will except any reasonable offer. Frank: smptemonkey@yahoo.com
Very True about the Wico.
I Still have one and it NEVER broke!
Why cant they make controllers like THAT any more!
That is…(sniff)…so beautiful…
Love it! Nostalgia orgasm!
As awesome as the original? I think not :)
