Noen wins the internet for finding sources to back up every assertion he made and was questioned on.

After viewing the sources, I am now scared to go to sleep at night knowing that Beck is out there... somewhere....

I love how they go from "the top tax bracket may have to go to 80-90%, even 95%" to "therefore the government will take away 95% of everyone's money, and there will be roving gangs and cities will be wasteland." After hearing that, what red-blooded American wouldn't grab his sniper rifle to stave off that future?

For once, Glenn Beck isn't the point.

Hear, hear! Man falls on LIVE national TV show, someone cuts in a video of a cat (toonses, from SNL?) playing the organ, and several BB's get derailed by the mere "presence" of Glenn Beck in the video.

For those that argue Glenn should have acted faster, remember this: it was unexpected, the fellow WHISPERS to Glenn, and the whole thing took what 10-15 seconds? In context, his reaction was fine (and, IMHO, normal) - but for many, it seems context doesn't matter ('cuz the left-wing blogs tell them Beck is the anti-christ, despite his massive ratings (TV and radio), his NYT bestselling books, and his sold-out live shows.) Being popular doesn't mean he is right, but he must be on to something.

I'm not really going to search on every, droll bullet point that you commented on but I grabbed what struck me as the most extreme:

"At least one of the recent white supremacists who've committed multiple murders had propaganda material from Beck and Hannity.
Oh, I gotta see a link to that - come on, America is waiting..."

This sounds kinda out there, even for me but...wait for it...Ta-Da! 30 seconds and the magic of google later...
http://suzieqq.wordpress.com/2009/04/08/richard-poplawski-influenced-by-fox-news-host-glenn-beck-and-right-wing-radio/

Now, you could go out and search on the bullet points you listed and look for the truth or you can wait and see if someone posts the proof for you.

Personally, I would want to know the truth about my points of view but based on your comments and your obvious appreciation of faux news, I am betting you want your opinions spoon fed to you and in the form of caustic simple-sentences that you can mindlessly blurt out when someone challenges your world view.

Have a great day.

is it possible to combine schadenfreude and honest respect?

because i was certainly laughing at the guy while he was toppling over, while at the same time completely admiring his ability to articulate what was happening to him.

i don't think Beck was really clueless [about this, anyway] - just surprised like most of us would have been in that situation.

Timothy Hutton,
"First off, this was a couple weeks ago - old news IMHO."

Mr. Hutton this is one of the most frustrating things I read on the comments on Boingboing. I appreciate your opinion, and the right to your opinion. However it is called "boing boing a directory of wonderful things". No where is it advertised as Boing boing a directory of brand spanking new things. I and a few others found the video and the guests ability to explain what was happening interesting. So at least it does fit the criteria of BoingBoing.

As for the rest, KevinC does have a point. It is usually best to support your arguments then to have them come back to bite you, because you neglected to research them and left yourself open to the "show me" can of worms. That is just a cautionary word of advice, lord knows I have stuck my foot in the mouth several times, but I try to learn from my mistakes.

Best wishes,
-Tizroc

Many networks would respectfully cut to commercial, but not Fox News! I can hear the director now: "Camera 2, get me a shot of him on the floor! Come on, chop chop! OK, take camera 2!"

@ #17 Anonymous:

Thanks for the link to http://knowyourmeme.com/memes

That's a goldmine of internet fun right there! I'm not sure something counts as a "meme" if everyone has to go look it up, though.

Back to topic: The more I think about this clip, the more it haunts me. This guy's composure and self-awareness are totally awesome. I now hope that my own last word before I die is "Gone." As in, "Going, going..." =D

Does anybody know why this fellow fainted, or have a good guess? What medical conditions provide frequent, pretelegraphed fainting spells that look like this?

Its not really that uncommon for someone to know when they are going to pass out. I have some form of epilepsy, (most likely temporal lobe) and I know more than a minute in advance of when I am going to have a seizure. I can tell when its going to happen and can get myself into a safe place. Its fun time 100%

How 'bout the fact that the guy TRIES to tell Beck that he's unwell - TWICE - and the silly bastard just keeps talking, and when the guy does his best to communicate that he's going out (if you've ever passed out -- and I'm not talking after over-consumption of chemical products - you know how damned difficult it is to even try to stay vertical, let alone manage to communicate that you're about to drop like a bag of bricks)

...Beck shakes his hand, acts stunned when he DOES drop (and it's possible that Beck was stunned, because he wasn't paying any attention at all to the guest or anything they said)...

and then makes sure that they get a good camera view of the poor guy crumpled in a heap on the floor, instead of actually trying to HELP the guy...like, you know, maybe rolling him onto his back so breathing might be a little easier.

a-hole of the highest magnitude, because of his complete fascination with the hot air coming out of his own mouth and the ratings, rather than having even a shred of compassion or concern for the poor bastard laying on the floor, and not at all for anything else he does or says (don't get me started on THAT).

So many questions
=================
"Has Glenn called Obama's policies Socialist and Fascist, yes. Nazi, no. Prove me otherwise."

YouTube: Glenn Beck Compares Obama to Fascist Nazis

Although Beck does not speak the word Nazi he repeatedly shouts Fascism! while behind him plays Nazi footage. Beck has frequently made use of Nazi video footage while exclaiming that we are headed towards socialism and/or fasism. He appears to accept Jonah Goldberg's false equivilence of leftist socialism with Nazi fascism. "Liberal Fascism" and its thesis are Newspeak: using a word to mean its opposite, thereby rendering the word itself meaningless.

===================================
"Violence against liberals and the government? Let's go to the video tape - please..."

Beck compares Democratic government officials to bloodsucking vampires. This is classic Nazi propaganda but substituting liberals for the bloodsucking Jew instead.

The eliminationist rhetoric coming from Beck, Hannity, Savage and other is intended to incite right wing violence.

"The effects of this kind of rhetoric, as we saw in the 1990s with the militia crowd, is especially toxic. It has a radicalizing effect on people who believe it -- because the situation, as they see it, is now so dire that radical action (or more properly, reaction) is required."

Sean Hannity urges armed revolt?

"Citing the names of Paul Revere, Patrick Henry, John Hancock and John Adams, Hannity explained that they met under a tree to “air their grievances against the tyrannical King George. The sons of liberty would become an early voice for the rights of an oppressed citizenry.”

With awe in his voice, Hannity said that the colonists hung two tax collectors in effigy from a tree “and from that day forward, it became known as the 'Liberty Tree.'”"

Glenn Beck thinks 'political correctness' is driving people to shooting rampages

"So, according to Glenn Beck, murderous rampages are the inevitable consequence of conservatives not getting what they want."

=========================
Glenn Beck discusses what would happen if a bunch of hicks rose up and decided to violently overthrow the evil gubmint

"During Bush’s presidency people like me were called traitors on a fairly regular basis because we didn’t show Bush the proper deference when he’d do some goofy shit like choke on a pretzel. Now we have guys on the teevee that are openly talking about armed insurrection against a democratically elected government and it’s considered the most patriotic and pro-American thing a feller could do with hisself."

============================================
We can see why Bernie Goldberg's book was an inspiration to the Knoxville church gunman

"The Go-Cheney-Yourself approach to discourse is no doubt what wins Bernie Goldberg so many fans on the right who snap up his books and hang on his every misbegotten word.

Including, it's quite clear, that fellow who last July walked into that Unitarian church in Knoxville and started shooting: Jim David Adkisson.

The manifesto he composed before his murderous rampage was just released; you can read the whole thing here [pdf file], and it's worth reading in its entirety for a number of reasons. But I especially took note of Part III:"

"This was a symbolic killing. Who I wanted to kill was every Democrat in the Senate & House, the 100 people in Bernard Goldberg's book. I'd like to kill everyone in the mainstream media. But I know those people were inaccessible to me. I couldn't get to the generals & high ranking officers of the Marxist movement so I went after the foot soldiers, the chickenshit liberals that vote in these traitorous people. Someone had to get the ball rolling. I volunteered. I hope others do the same. It's the only way we can rid America of this cancerous pestilence."

Bernard Goldberg is a frequent guest on Fox shows by Beck, Hannity O'Reilly and others.

Corporate Lobbyists Raising Money For Tea Parties

Teabaggers are having a hard time coming to terms with the fact that "grassroots" demonstrations aren't orchestrated by corporate lobbyists. Understandable -- if you didn't have any experience organizing a demonstration that didn't have millions in free PR from Fox News and well-funded GOP fat cats providing a national infrastructure, you wouldn't know the difference.

They seem to be particularly upset about links I sent out yesterday on Twitter (using the teaparty hashtags #tcot and #teaparty) regarding a report by Lee Fang at Think Progress documenting the involvement of corporate lobbyists FreedomWorks in organizing the teabaggers. FreedomWorks is run by ladies' man (and registered lobbyist) Dick Armey, and if they're not "organizing" the Tea parties, it's news to them.

=========================
"I'm pretty sure asking folks to murder government officials is against some law (how they missed it I can't be sure)."

Saying "The President should be shot" is constitutionally protected. Distinguished from "I'm going to shoot the President." The former is protected speech, the latter is not. However, just because something is constitutionally protected speech doesn't mean it adheres to journalistic standards and ought to be widely distributed in a "respectable" TV show or magazine.

Brandenburg v Ohio 395 U.S. 444 (1969)

"Freedoms of speech and press do not permit a State to forbid advocacy of the use of force or of law violation except where such advocacy is directed to inciting or producing imminent lawless action and is likely to incite or produce such action."

Finally,
This search of Orcinus with keyword Beck

has considerable more detail on right wing eliminationist hate speech and how it effects society. David has followed right wing and white supremacist violence for years. His latest book is a must read on the issue.

The Eliminationists: How Hate Talk Radicalized the American Right

So many questions
=================
“Has Glenn called Obama’s policies Socialist and Fascist, yes. Nazi, no. Prove me otherwise.”

He appears to accept Jonah Goldberg’s false equivilence of leftist socialism with Nazi fascism. “Liberal Fascism” and its thesis are Newspeak: using a word to mean its opposite, thereby rendering the word itself meaningless.

===================================
“Violence against liberals and the government? Let’s go to the video tape – please…”

Beck compares Democratic government officials to bloodsucking vampires. This is classic Nazi propaganda but substituting liberals for the bloodsucking Jew instead.

The eliminationist rhetoric coming from Beck, Hannity, Savage and other is intended to incite right wing violence.

“The effects of this kind of rhetoric, as we saw in the 1990s with the militia crowd, is especially toxic. It has a radicalizing effect on people who believe it — because the situation, as they see it, is now so dire that radical action (or more properly, reaction) is required.”

Sean Hannity urges armed revolt?

“Citing the names of Paul Revere, Patrick Henry, John Hancock and John Adams, Hannity explained that they met under a tree to “air their grievances against the tyrannical King George. The sons of liberty would become an early voice for the rights of an oppressed citizenry.”

With awe in his voice, Hannity said that the colonists hung two tax collectors in effigy from a tree “and from that day forward, it became known as the ‘Liberty Tree.’””

Glenn Beck thinks ‘political correctness’ is driving people to shooting rampages

“So, according to Glenn Beck, murderous rampages are the inevitable consequence of conservatives not getting what they want.”

=========================
Glenn Beck discusses what would happen if a bunch of hicks rose up and decided to violently overthrow the evil gubmint

“During Bush’s presidency people like me were called traitors on a fairly regular basis because we didn’t show Bush the proper deference when he’d do some goofy shit like choke on a pretzel. Now we have guys on the teevee that are openly talking about armed insurrection against a democratically elected government and it’s considered the most patriotic and pro-American thing a feller could do with hisself.”

============================================
We can see why Bernie Goldberg’s book was an inspiration to the Knoxville church gunman

“The Go-Cheney-Yourself approach to discourse is no doubt what wins Bernie Goldberg so many fans on the right who snap up his books and hang on his every misbegotten word.

Including, it’s quite clear, that fellow who last July walked into that Unitarian church in Knoxville and started shooting: Jim David Adkisson.

The manifesto he composed before his murderous rampage was just released; you can read the whole thing here [pdf file], and it’s worth reading in its entirety for a number of reasons. But I especially took note of Part III:”

“This was a symbolic killing. Who I wanted to kill was every Democrat in the Senate & House, the 100 people in Bernard Goldberg’s book. I’d like to kill everyone in the mainstream media. But I know those people were inaccessible to me. I couldn’t get to the generals & high ranking officers of the Marxist movement so I went after the foot soldiers, the chickenshit liberals that vote in these traitorous people.
"is it possible to combine schadenfreude and honest respect?"

No, no respect. Remember, the guy is there to lie and spread GOP talking points and propaganda. He is part of those desperately trying to deflect any responsibility for their having destroyed the economy.

The GOP only exists because a very few ultra conservative billionaires prop it up. Their greed and naked ambition has been so extreme of late that they've lost support from anyone with a functioning brain cell. Leaving only the illiterate 20 percenters, the people who cannot even spell "moron", as their sole base of support. No pity, no respect.

wow...this is what happens when you don't watch much mainstream tv:

First, I had to look up Glenn Beck to find out who he was.

Secondly, what is with the cat playing the organ? Was that actually PART of the show?

And thirdly...who is his semi-conscious guest?

Finally...does anyone know why he passed out? Was he overly surprised by Glenn's clearly awesome brick wall graphics, or was it crazy purple knock-out gas?

Okay, I'll admit - that last one was a joke. But seriously, does anyone know if the cat was spliced in after, or was it actually AIRED with the organ-playing cat footage?

To #1 and anyone else with a similar post--

How was that NOT funny? You really need a description of why that was funny?

Man.... maybe you should read some SubGenius literature and loosen up.

@Timothy Hutton:

"NBC, ABC, and CBS promote many things"

Erm, find me one thing that any of those stations "promoted" like this. And not things that relate to their own stations, like an NBC Presidential Debate...

"Promotion is not the same as sponsorship... The key word is pays."

a) You are still ignoring the fact of hours of free airtime, which would otherwise cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, were devoted to the Tea Parties. There is such a thing as payment in kind.

b) Fine, call it promotion. What were we talking about again? Oh yes, the "Tea Parties" that Fox News "promoted" and which would never have raised more than a few dozen people without Fox News.

"At least one of the recent white supremacists who've committed multiple murders had propaganda material from Beck and Hannity.
Oh, I gotta see a link to that - come on, America is waiting..."

Now, you could go out and search on the bullet points you listed and look for the truth or you can wait and see if someone posts the proof for you.

The only place the name "Beck" appears in the linked to "article" (aka blog posting by SUSIEQQ) is in the title of the post where s/he poses a rhetorical question. A mention in the headline of a wordpress.com blog is proof of little more than that the author can spell the name "Beck".

Sorry, you missed on that one - but for too many netizens, your 30 seconds equals "research" and "proof" - it is only speculation by Max Blumenthal (author of the article SUSIEQQ completely copied onto her blog), not that the shooter had Glenn Beck Propoganda with him when he pulled the trigger, as originally asserted.

The shooter was posting on Alex Jones's website, and in case you missed it - Alex Jones is not Glenn Beck.

Oh, and "The Daily Beast" is a tiny bit biased...

Mellowknees...it was most certainly not aired as you saw it with the cat footage. That's someone editing stuff in for YouTube. I missed that meme too as I didn't quite get why that's supposed to be so funny.
Not a big fan of Beck, but I think he acted appropriately. I mean really, how many people sit there and project that fact that they're passing out. Most people just try and push on until they drop. Beck took his hand after the guy said it a second time

Ok, a couple of things. This poor person's name is David Buckner. There seems to be no mention of his medical condition. However, having been intimately familiar with a somewhat similar illness there are a dozen different things that can cause this. He clearly anticipated it, so it is something that he has experienced before which indicates an ongoing condition. Sadly, the fact that he passed out indicates to me that the condition is not under control and most likely has not been diagnosed properly. One thing that could lead to this happening is (remember that I am not a doctor - I just know a few things about illness) is something called postural hypotension, which in turn could very easily be a symptom of a deeper underlying condition, some of them rare. As I said, I doubt even if he has been diagnosed with postural hypotension, as it is my opinion the quality of our medicine has actually been going down when it comes to diagnosing rare conditions.

@samsam The keyboard cat is relatively new meme that has gone viral recently. So even if you have not heard of him, you will see him around for a while. The keyboard cat video was filmed in the late eighties/early nineties and stuck on the web by performance artist Charlie Schmidt. Other people took it to use to "play people off" after some misfortune. Sometimes they are hilarious, sometimes not so much. Because I know what it's like to get sick, I did not find this particular keyboard cat video funny. In my opinion, a funnier keyboard cat video might would be this one, as there is not a medical condition/emergency at hand.

The cat's name was Fatso, and he passed away a year ago. Keyboard cat was "helped" with playing by the artist's hand in his costume.

Orthostatic syncope versus suicidally depressed teenager? I find the fainting episode to be pretty mild.

Mr. Hutton this is one of the most frustrating things I read on the comments on Boingboing.

In response to my questioning the freshness of this link...

Granted, his point that Boing Boing does not hold itself out as the most up-to-date site is fair (indeed, some of the more interesting posts regard looking back), so for that I stand corrected.

But...

Was this really one of the "most frustrating things (you've) read on the comments at Boingboing"?
