Eric Stephenson Greg Pattillo is a beatboxing flautist (if you got it, flaut it), shown here performing a stirring rendition of the Super Mario theme.

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

@cory One demerit for “if you got it, flaut it”! Heheh.

  • jksk

    His name is Greg Patillo.

Great video however this is in fact the legendary Greg Pattillo. Eric Stephenson is the cellist in the awesome group Project which Pattillo fronts. http://cdbaby.com/cd/projectmusic2.

    His Inspector Gadget is better

  • bklynchris

    cool just cool

  • eustace

An improvement over plain vanilla beatboxing, I think. I can’t see the word flautist without finding a fault in it – but I like flutist, if it catches on…

  • monstrinho_do_biscoito

    flute-fucking-player

you shall not convince me flautist is a word.

As a flute player, I really prefer “flutist” to “flautist.” I don’t play the flaut, I play the flute!

  • palindrome

What about just a plain old boxing flautist? Or rather, two boxing flautists boxing each other in a one-on-one boxing/flute jam throwdown. How do they play with the gloves on? I don’t know. I’m just the idea guy.

Slightly less interesting (though no less entertaining) would be the boxing flatulists.

This video has been around for a while I really like his “flight of the bumblebee”

  • hbl

As much as I love videos of people beatboxing (it’s a fine line between awesome and absurd), and of renditions of the Super Mario theme on varied instruments, I’m not sure mashing them up has worked in this instance. Kudos to him for trying though.

this one is closer to the truth:

This guy is great. The video is also more than two years old.

  • Tom Hale

I’m not really interested in this sort of thing and have never heard of beatboxing combined w a flute – But, since I stumbled upon this a moment ago, I thought I’d link it BEATBOX FLUTE : NATHAN LEE

  • nehpetsE

I think heard a piece about him on NPR last week.

BTW i am the only one who initially mis-read
    ” Beatboxing flautist” as

    “Beatboxing FLATUALIST”?

its only a mater of time…

Better quality sound/video, another video here featuring “Nathan ‘Flutebox’ Lee” in a joint performance from him and “Beardeyman” (Beatboxer) on a visit to Google’s London offices. Check the HD button after loading for the best quality.

The puns, they are killing me. A falafel pun, and now this? Oy vey.

  • invisibelle

This actually grosses me out. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but I’m sure it has a lot to do with spit.
