Videos from stage production of Little Brother

Bill Massiola, who adapted my novel Little Brother for a critically acclaimed stage-play running in Chicago right now at the Griffin Theatre Company performing at the Athenaeum Theatre, sent me these three video clips from the production. I'm coming through Chicago on July 9 to see the play (it runs until July 19); based on these clips I'm incredibly excited to see more!

Man, what a blast it must be to see your stuff on stage!

The set for that middle video is making my family jewels climb upstairs for shelter.

I WAS THERE! Loved it.

Are they publishing the script, or even full videos or anything? I suspect my real life Little Brother, currently wrapping up middle school, loved the book and might be interested in staging this at his school!

Loved the book and as a Chicagoan I'm hope to meet you on the 9th.

Just got back from the show tonight (Sat, 27) VERY GOOD.

These guys deserve to be playing a much bigger audience. It's rare I manage to sit through an entire production without my interest or attention waning and they had me captivated the entire time.

Lots from the book was skipped, but it all worked and the real force and message was left intact. I won't ruin anything for those who haven't read the novel but the last few scenes were definitely sufficiently intense. Incredible props to the actors of Griffin Theater!

Reminds me how sick the book made me.

Great play, great book.

Please tell me they kept the scene with the punk concert in the park. That scene always gives me goosebumps.

Other than that, it seems cool. Note sure about the music, though.

Any plans to bring it to Europe ?

Especially after seeing these videos, I really want to see this. Little Brother was released under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-ShareAlike license, so the script for the stage production should also be CC. Good news for your local drama company.

I couldn't watch the second video - I played the first 5 seconds of it, and I had to scramble for the Pause button. That's way too close to home. Reading that part of the book brought back bad memories, and I don't think I could stant to WATCH it.

My brother is the director of a high school theater department in AZ, he would FLIP if this material were made available on CC. Even if it weren't free, if you had to pay a royalty it usually isn't much.

What I like about it is that a lot of high school students wouldn't read a book unless it was part of a curriculum, but they'll go to school plays to see their friends. It also turns the cast and crew into evangelists for your cause. What a great way to get a message out.

PLEASE let us know if/when the text of the play becomes available, there are SO many school theatre departments and youth theatre orgs out there itching to perform stuff like this.

If Cory hasn't yet had the experience of seeing his work staged, he's in for an unnerving evening. Oddly, riding above the underlying prideful satisfaction is the feeling that every minor flub or hitch or hesitation is YOUR fault, and that you didn't really do the job well enough.

A couple drinks beforehand helps.

you all realize of course that now we have to see the rock opera and burlesque versions.

''Little Brother'' rock opera?

Actually, ....

Good idea. Perhaps sometime it will be performed in the english theater here in frankfurt/Germany. That would be really great.

Any idea how one might obtain a CC-licensed copy of the script for this stage production?

I'd be more likely to see the play than read the book, honestly.
