Victor sez, "Our documentary on virtual worlds, Second Skin, which premiered at SXSW last year, will finally be coming out in theaters and DVD in August. I produced it with my friend Peter Brauer and it was directed by my brother Juan Carlos. The three of us spent two years racing around the world following gamers who had fallen in love, become addicted, formed enormous guilds, or made their living playing MMOs like World of Warcraft, Everquest and Second Life. From gold farmers to disabled gamers, we tried to get a sense of how integral virtual worlds are to the fabric of life these days. We'd love you to check it out- the first five minutes are available on Current TV- here. The movie's coming to NYC, LA, Austin and Boston in mid-August, and DVD everywhere on August 25th."
I saw Second Skin at the Toronto Film Festival and was blown away -- by turns touching and funny, and always fascinating, this is a loving but clear-eyed look at the relationship of gamers to their games.
I discovered The 13 Clocks by reading Neil Gaiman’s introduction to the 2008 New York Review of Books edition (which I found in The View from the Cheap Seats, a massive collection of Gaiman’s nonfiction), where he calls it “Probably the best book in the world” — how could I resist?
Francis Tseng’s simulator game invites you to “grow your startup and please those investors until there’s nothing left to give” by building biotech, defense, machine learning, cloud computing, drone and space companies with a crew of employees whose low wages can be mitigated with bulletproof coffee and whose products can be sold with “causewashing” sponsorships […]
The View from the Cheap Seats, Neil Gaiman’s mammoth collection of nonfiction essays, introductions, and speeches, is a remarkable explanatory volume in which Gaiman explains not just why he loves the things he loves, but also what makes them great.

Finally! It must be about 2 years since I heard about this documentary, I’d actually given up on a proper release and just assumed they’d given up finding a publishing deal or something. Glad it’s finally going to see the light of day.
as someone who plays WoW, i’ve been definitely looking forward to this. it looks fantastic.
I too am looking fwd to this – hopefully it will help to dispel the many unfortunate myths surrounding gamers and their lives. I’ve gamed most of my life (34) and still enjoy everything from Sudoku to paper D&D to WoW. According to the naysayers my years of WoW playing and weekly tabletop gaming should have destroyed my life – yet somehow I’ve managed to stay married and successfully employed /snark. Not that I don’t know gamers who have lost control…but then again I know some golf widows, some alcoholics, and my crazy aunt can’t go into the grocery store without picking up her scratch-offs.
Not to be condescending, but the syndicate is, as far as online GAMING (note the word) goes, not a prestigeous guild.
The syndicate is in all honesty a wonderful project and a merit to be a member of, but not in the GAMING part of mmo’s, but in the Community part, They are probably the leading mmorpg community (not in the meaning of a set of forums/user profiles ofc), But not in the GAMING part.
Saw this film at SXSW — it got a great reception. Thrilled that it’s finally getting a wider release. And super-timely: They have interviews with gold farmers (now “outlawed” in China)….
It is sad that no one else has posted after July 1st. Anyways, the film is playing right now on Hulu and will expire in two days but is gearing up for a DVD release on August 25th.
