A guide there once told me it never burnt down because there were no toilets, so people just used the back of stalls and balcony, or, if it was a bad performance, from the balcony onto the stage itself. Apparently Stan Laurel bought a joke for his first show from a joke peddler in the nearby market. The Panoptican is awesome.
