 Squidink Kfc
This former Kentucky Fried Chicken in the Palms community of West Los Angeles is now Kind For Cures, a medical marijuana dispensary. And the Colonel's counsel calls in 3... 2... 1... "New KFC Opens In Palms? Sort of..."

J France, you have to be a legal resident of California to get a recommendation (not a prescription) in CA. The same goes for every other medical marijuana state in the U.S.

  • Quothz

J, in Cali, it’s not hard at all for a local resident to get a prescription. But no dice on the “international” thing: Even out-of-staters are out of luck.

I really ought’a get a scrip for my, uh, anxiety. Honestly, I suspect we’ll see full legalization before too too long, but the card would be a cool piece of Americana to have lying around t’show the grandkids.

  • Aloisius

So… how difficult is it to get a prescription? If, say, I was an international tourist that suddenly came down with a bad case of glaucoma?

A couple months ago I was walking down Venice Beach and was overwhelmed by the pot dispensaries. They had kids out front telling everyone that they had doctors onsite ready to get you a prescription and you could get all your marijuana needs filled.

There was no pretense that it was for the sick. It was just so, commercial. Even in Amsterdam people are low key about it.

So I have to say, it seems there is little to no barriers to obtaining a prescription here as long as you a resident.

  • Phikus

My pizza delivery guy used to deliver my KB every Friday like clockwork (yes, I have clockwork delivered also.) I don’t know what the legality is on a dispensary delivering, but it would seem like a natural business opportunity.

  • Anonymous

The place is owned by white guys, for the people who seemingly care. Another place, very very very close is owned by black guys (and i think maybe even a woman) and it is MUCH more discreet, MUCH more secure, and MUCH more friendly.
KFC’s a sloppy dispensary and I fear they didn’t take the time to secure the place, especially with all of this attention. 2 dispensaries in the valley got robbed last month and the people used machine guns. That’s scary. I now have 7 within a 1 mile radius. Just drive by it and you won’t be impressed. Or maybe you will, who knows. p.s. The neighborhood is a great neighborhood.

Wt mnt. Hw cld chckn jnt pssbly g t f bsnss n Plms?

  • Ugly Canuck

What they’re selling there now, is better for yer health than what they were selling here previously (after all, it’s upon Doctor’s orders!)…particularly before KFC stopped using those evil trans-fats. (Let’s not talk about animal fats in general…my Dr. sez they’re not so good for ya, either!)

    Therefore, an urban improvement, no?

  • Phikus

    …especially with legal pot around…

And damn, I hate to be called wrong by Anonymous. Have you noticed he / she seems to comment more than anyone else? XD

  • arkizzle / Moderator

    Anonymous is prolific, yo!

  • Ben

Okay, I’ll put it this way: I find it odd that BoingBoing is promoting an openly racist article.

  • Takuan

nothing racist in the article. Some comments perhaps.

  • Moriarty

This is gentrification I think we can all get behind.

  • Halloween Jack

Come in as original recipe, leave extra crispy.

  • cycle23

#24, Svenski is trying to say since lots of blacks live in Palms, and lord knows blacks like fried chicken, that he’s surprised a chicken business was unable to succeed, just to translate.

But Boingboing may be too hip to care about racism like that. For all I know, my post will get disemvoweled instead.

We don’t leave the palace enough to know who lives outside the gates.

  • Matt Eric

All they need now is a drive-through.

  • buddy66

PHIKUS, let them freely comment; but I, for one, do not *dialogue* with lurkers.

  • Ben

I find it odd that #24 Svenski was disemvowelled for his seemingly racist post, but yet the linked story contained this gem as a caption to the photo: “Fried chicken spot becomes weed dispensary, probably serves similar clientele.”

  • jimh

I wonder if they still blow the aroma out into the neighborhood like the Colonel does?

  • PFlint

    No coke…

    Pepsi products only!

you are ALL wrong, i dont live in Cali and i got a reccomendation card, i made up an address off the top of my head and got it and its valid and works, i got it at the Venice Beach Kush Club on the beach…

I find it odd that you find it odd.

    One herb, no spices.

  • oasisob1

Come for the medical marijuana, stay for the munchies.

  • gollux

Trademark Infringement… Heh, if you abandon a property, it should be your responsibility to remove distinguishing trademarked facades, and after the fact, pay for an external remodel. Ptthhht!

    Amended comment for MajorMattMason…

One herb, no spices and a side order of incense!

I wondered what they were up to on that corner. Too bad I just moved that would have been convenient.

  • Jason Rizos

Imagine going back in a time machine to 1995 and showing this to some high school kid and saying, “See, this is where you’ll be getting pot in the future.”

  • arkizzle / Moderator

Yeah Anonymous21, even the people who weren’t addressing that issue are wrong.. ALL WRONG!

  • Teller

In Mill Valley, north of SF, they were dispensing it at the KFC/Taco Bell drive-thru with your food. That’s service.

  • J France

Not even a bucket of their finest would make me want the real KFC.

So… how difficult is it to get a prescription? If, say, I was an international tourist that suddenly came down with a bad case of glaucoma?

  • libelle

Yeah, the dispensaries are a little out of control here in LA. While I support the medical use (and don’t have anything seriously against people who use it recreationally), the dispensaries are going to destroy their own ecosystem by overdoing it.

They should at least pretend that they’re interested in peoples’ medical conditions. They shouldn’t be like the ones on Venice Beach where dred-head white boys accost you while they’re smoking fat doobies.

They’re only going to ruin it for the people who really need it.
