KlezHop freak Socalled

Jesse Brown, a BoingBoing guest-blogger, is the host of TVO's Search Engine podcast.

Socalled AKA Josh Dolgin is an annoying, talented, annoyingly talented "buddy" of mine.

We used to make cartoons together but these days he's a big star on the European Klezmer circuit (!).

He fuses klezmer with hiphop, rediscovers aging novelty musicians and does stupid magic tricks. His live show is incredible.

I like this video of his better than his more successful one, but I'm usually difficult in that way. Enjoy!

  1. His shows *are* incredible. All the Jews in the house were singing along raucously because he takes a lot of songs from Yiddish theatre. I asked my friend working the back: “What’s the deal? Do all of you guys know these songs?” “Yep.”

  2. Awesome! I saw him at the Regina Folk Fest this year and they really surprised me! The beats and some tracks are very infectious. Not as good on CD but go see them live if you get a chance.

  3. He is very interesting! I agree with you, I prefer the video you post here more than the Cowboy one on YouTube, but that one is pretty pretty pan-musical.

  4. Irving fields fans can catch Socalled, Gonzales and Irving Fields at Montreal’s Ex Centris theatre Sept 26.

  5. I though this was sorta cool when I watched it yesterday and promptly forgot all about it…

    Until ALL OF TODAY!

What IS that song your humming?

These are the good old days! nana nana NA nanananana
