Love this air-conditioner cover ("Tape & painted cardboard on window AC unit cover, Bushwick, Brooklyn NY") snapped by Flickr user Dbilly.

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

Cardboard, because it rusts and dents just like sheet metal, eh?

  • Deidzoeb

Very cute, but don’t you need those sharp, finny looking things to be exposed to outside air for some functional reason? I can’t tell from the picture if they’re just painted over or covered by tape or cardboard. I assume it wouldn’t work as well with the fins covered or painted, might burn more energy to cool as much as an unhindered A/C unit.

No worries, folks: 1. This was done in the late fall and there was no AC unit in the box at the time, and 2. It was very easily removable. Cheers! -D.Billy

you need the sharp fins to transfer the heat out of the building. this unit is now probably useless!

  • nordvand

Probably has the same quality content that my TV does most days!

  • randalll

Maybe it’s an unworking unit. The tape is covering up the air intake, which would burn up the innards toot sweet.

Wow! They even included the Pluge, -Inphase and +Quadrature tests. This individual should get a free membership in the SMPTE for this!

Didn’t get the green quite right, though, or else the photo’s out of white balance.
