I like stuff like this. I definitely rigged my dry erase board eraser to be a spy cam in college. It pays to know when the RAs are coming a bit before they get there.

"Oh, awesome, that could really help people document abuses of power!"

"Oh goodness, that could really be used to spy on people and abuse authority!"

Another instance of that wonderful double take of modern tech.

Yeah, it's starting to annoy me that most "spy cameras" are designed so that you need to point the object *directly at* someone in order to film.

As others have pointed out, pointing something (a pen, a lighter, a car key fob, and all the other things cameras have been stuffed into) directly at someone is a dead giveaway. Why not make 'em so that the camera is askew? if you're pointing the corner of something directly at someone, it's a lot less obvious, and so a lot less likely to get you a truncheon to the face.

I'd probably just mod whatever it was stuck in to fix that, but it'd be nice if you could buy them that way.

Also, the resolution of these things still plonks them squarely in the "toy" bracket. Surely *someone* must sell professional-quality wireless concealed cameras?

you don't have to point it at anyone. Just "forget your keys" for a while, leave 'em sitting on a table or something.

What's the battery life, though?

Bought one of these, it crapped out after a couple days, didn't even really get to use it, just a couple quick test videos. Went to charge it up afterward and now it is an "Unrecognized USB Device" or something.

Wouldn't recommend buying one.

Oh, absolutely great. It looks just like a key fob. Until you start pointing it at people and filming them, that is!

Most spy cameras are designed so that they can be filming the target while looking completely unobtrusive. A fake button. A fake pen that clips in your pocket. A fake briefcase. But this? You don't think someone will be suspicious when you take out your key fob during your secret mafia meeting and press the button, pointing it at them?

Um, how is that a "key." From the title, I assumed it would be something that looked like this: http://www.twisedesign.com/gfx/portfolio/key2.jpg

I feel like it should be called a "key fob." Like the things with the alarm buttons and such (though, i've never actually had a car with one of those new things).

Modern Audis have a key that looks just like that, which slots into the dashboard. But I agree, it's not a common shape.

Actually, I think this is the perfect form factor for a simple USB camera. (Think mp3 player.) A thumbnail sized display to give you an idea if you're really pointing at what you want would be helpful though. (You can squeeze enough information for that purpose into a 88x66 display ...)

Now I wonder how long before movie theaters... Crap, Anonymous beat me to it!

My question is; How long is the recording time, per gig of SDHC card?

And I like this one better. As mentioned above, you can clip it to your shirt and it won't look too out-of-place:

If you are in the dirt gathering business this is a variant of the almighty mini key chain recorder - let you find that one on your own. An identical internal but revised form factor product is made by the same Chinese company and sells heavily on auction sites.

I have 29 of these (similar) in my case of tricks. They work flawlessly although you have to practice your aiming technique and methods of fielding such a unit. Also, you have to learn to use the power on/off and record functions first, or it can confuse you as the have latency.

I am a police officer and have come to specialize in technical surveillance operations in my last twenty years of work within my 1000+ man department. I have had hundreds of hours of training from numerous electronic and technical schools where these were only dreamed of. When these devices hit the market about two years ago they rendered thousands of dollars of our inventory in "pro-law enforcement" technology useless. And those pro-companies are truly pissed! No other device is available with the Video/Audio quality these things can deliver for their required form factor fooprint. Now keep in mind, this is not a high definition handy cam here (although the HD versions will be out in about 21 months) but rather the best solution when covert is absolutely necessary. With room lighting you can achieve facial feature recognition quality. These devices are reliable enough that they have been used by several agencies numerous times to provide video/audio evidence in State (and several Federal) prosecutions. They are so inexpensive you can buy several - reconfiguring them into any item or device you need. The internals were once mounted in the collar of a suit shirt - gathering three hours of evidence.

For those interested in the PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS [as an individual below mentions are absent - DUDE, you are obviously not a individual aware of how difficult Video/Audio capture is when you have to be absolutely careful not to get caught!] Here are the basics of the latest unit I received:

Video Codecs are MJPEG, the video is trumped up but manages 720x480 pixels with 30 (30.9995811 actually) FPS. (This reduces much of the blur associated with old 640x480/25fps units) These are LOW LIGHT cams sensitive to infrared illuminators and have a very low LUX rating (although not exactly known and probably the most important feature.)

Audio comes in MONO, ARAW Codec, 22050 khz sample rate, 16 bits per sample, and and a bit rate of 352 kb/s.

As for the mega pixels, they tell you the resolution, all you gotta do is the math, but it is close to .34 mega pixels in video and 1.9 mega pix in picture quality. Reality is both Pictures and Video check in at about .3 megapixels. (even though you will get photos that register at 1600x1200 and print that size they will just look like you just enlarged a 720x480 photo...the sensor is based strictly on achieving .3 megapix+ quality for video.)

Have fun snooping!

I am amused at how the "specifications" fail to mention the sample rate of the audio and the megapixel data for the video. I would never consider purchasing such a thing absent those two specifications.
