Postings The Wizard Of Oz-055Two years ago, I posted about graphic designer Jon Heilman's exquisite replica of the time portals map from Terry Gilliam's 1981 film Time Bandits. Now, Heilman has recreated the fantastic artwork emblazoned on Professor Marvel's wagon in Wizard of Oz. They're printed on canvas and available in a variety of sizes, starting at $36. I have one of Heilman's Time Bandits maps and the quality is impeccable, so I'm sure these are well worth the money too.

When I was growing up, there was a Land Of Oz theme park nearby located at Beech Mountain, North Carolina, and had a Professor Marvel wagon set up there. I think they did puppet shows out of the wagon; all the major characters had a miniature house along the yellow brick road and did a song-and dance number as Dorothy led the tourists around.

A good portion of the theme park is long gone due to the ‘need’ for more ski slopes, but they still have tours during the summer, and you can even rent the replica of Dorothy’s house. Great for immersive steampunkers, although the microwave is a bit jarring in that 30′s theme.

The half of the house I’d like to explore, though, is the connected ‘post-tornado’ duplicate of the house built at a 15 degree angle, complete with witches legs poking out from under it. Don’t know if that half is still intact, but they do still have the yellow brick road to explore..

Just don’t try prying out a brick to take home, the flying monkeys will get you.

“Per ardua ad alta.” is Latin for “Through difficulties to the heights.”

    Thanks for posting this David.

Anyone know where I can get one of these now the Marketplace has gone? Can’t buy one straight away, but I’d love to get one for my new apartment when I have a bit of cash–or con a family member into buying me one for Christmas…!

Don’t his famous words while addressing the citizens of Emerald City from his balloon.

    Par Ardua Ad Alta!

That’s lovely! For the record, the best Professor Marvel line:

Dorthy – “Please take us to see the Crown Heads of Europe.”

Marvel – “What? You know any? Oh – you mean the – thing.”

    and of lesser note:

Marvel (to his horse) – “We better take cover, Sylvester. Looks like this storm’s gonna be a whopper, as they say in the vernacular.”
