Government-backed gay bar in "Communist China" not so popular with The Gays

What if they opened a gay bar and no one came? Wait, no no -- don't go there. A gay bar in China's Yunnan province that receives government funding from the state health bureau for AIDS prevention is empty, because all the gay people are afraid that being seen there will lead to discrimination and harassment.

  1. It’s like the “Free HIV/AIDS Test” drive that they had in my (Chinese) wife’s home town. It didn’t take long for people to work out that those who tested positive were never seen again.

  2. There is no better way to keep track of a sub-culture any government does not find desirable than by giving them their own gathering place where they can be logged and entered into the system. I wonder if the Chinese government is perplexed that their new gay bar has no custom. No way anyone wants to end up on their collection lists.

  3. Ignoring the repressive and generally contemptible nature of the Chinese Government for a moment, does anyone really think the phrase Government run gay bar could ever result in anything other than severe disappointment in any country on Earth?

    1. #4: I think the phrase Government run gay bar could result in an AWESOME name for a band.

      And I call dibs!

  4. For a country trying to reduce its population growth, you’d think that’d be the last thing they’d stigmatize…
