Avi sez, "The design firm IDEO has made it's 'Human-Centered Design Toolkit' available for free download. This is essentially a complete methodology to power millions of garage innovation factories and should be the necessary component of any high-school kid's education."

Work - Human Centered Design Toolkit - IDEO (Thanks, Avi!)

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

    This is great!

Thanks so much for linking this. I took a class on Web Usability this past spring and our instructor used a lot of concepts from IDEO and one of our suggested reading texts was Designing Interactions by Moggridge!

I guess it’s cool that it’s free, but I can’t figure out what it is.

Nevermind high-school education, this toolkit has been the basis for an entire course in my Bachelor o’ Design (ID) education…

  • arikol

    Wow, cool
IDEO is obviously one of the greats in all parts of the design world. Thanks for pointing me to this one.

This is both interesting and mildly annoying. IDEO does great work. But so do many, many other designers. Annoyingly IDEO has come to be seen as owning many techniques (found both in this toolkit and in their Method cards.) Techniques used by others and used differently by others. Most frustratingly IDEO doesn’t share their process as one approach, doesn’t share their work as an introduction to a discussion about process… they always come to the discussion saying their IDEO and they have figured it out. My master’s thesis was on Human-Centered Design Research, and I can tell you that the specifics of this kind of work are still open questions.
