Map2 is a clever London streetmap: each of its quadrants unfolds to show a zoomed-in view of that region, then refolds again quickly and easily.

Map2 (via Red Ferret)

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

That is the worst embedded video player I’ve seen in a while. The map is really awesome though.

This zoomable map is innovative, compact, and easy to use.

think they’ll make these for other cities

Reminds me of the Marauder’s Map. Can it show me where everyone is in London?

I made something just like this back in 2002. I was working in emergency services and was hoping to put readily accessible information like poison control and heimlich maneuver directions on it (in addition to the obvious mapping possibilities). I wanted to call it something like “organami” or “parachute guide”. It’s surprisingly hard to make a map that folds smoothly and yet is still made from material sturdy enough to survive multiple uses!

Anyway, kudos to the maker. Not everyone has an iphone! See how far you can stretch the concept!

That is incredible, one of those head-slapping ideas that just seems so obvious in retrospect! I wonder what the downsides are? Probably more prone to tearing is about it; stouter tear-resistant card or plastic couldn’t fold so compactly.
Myself, when I was living in London I just made myself a custom mini-map taped together out of pages of an old AZ, just the pages where I would likely be going. It’s still in my wallet; from time to time I take it out and caress it wistfully.

The map is printed on tear resistant paper. It’s a plastic foil laminated with paper! So quite durable.

This is seriously the coolest thing i’ve seen as far as paper maps go (:
