"(#1) Real religions don't charge money for the performance of religious services. (#2) Real religions don't charge tens of thousands of dollars before they'll let you read their religious texts. (#3) Real religions don't keep black-bag detective squads on call and blackmail public officials who call attention to the ways in which Church of Scientology practices are illegal for a tax-exempt organization. BUT ..."

#1 Yes they do. Many churches "charge" for marriage, worship, and the like under the title of "donation". They also do a lot of free works for the communities that support them. What does Scientology do for its' community would be the appropriate question.
#2 Pre-printing press, they did. You had to be rich to afford the text, and rich enough to be able to learn how to read. Same veil, really. Scientology wants its' patrons to return to that era. A lot of churches do, as well (don't read xyz religion text, let a priest/bishop/rabbi/iman/prophet do it for you!)
#3 See: Swiss Guards (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_Guard)

There's a lot of under-handedness that goes along with religion. Religions offer power, and we all know what power does.

In other trafficking news, the maybe legal adviser to the maybe baby-stealers in Haiti may be the leader of a trafficking ring in Central America and the Caribbean.

The Church of Scientology has creeped me out for decades. Real religions don't charge money for the performance of religious services. Real religions don't charge tens of thousands of dollars before they'll let you read their religious texts. Real religions don't keep black-bag detective squads on call and blackmail public officials who call attention to the ways in which Church of Scientology practices are illegal for a tax-exempt organization. BUT ...

I'm dubious about this news conference and the resulting TV news reports for one reason: asking ex-members of a religion about that religion is like asking somebody's ex-spouse for a character reference.
