Facebook patents the feed

Facebook was awarded a major patent for "Dynamically providing a news feed about a user of a social network" this week. Details here. (via Dave Winer)

  1. Lovely example of the stupidity that will bring all reasonable IP down in a giant crash as litigation overtakes all the productive parts of our economy.

  2. I have to say I both love and hate FB. One of the things that’s most annoyed me is that their definition of “news feed” seems to be “an almost completely random bag of crap that occurred in roughly the last two weeks determined by a algorithm written by the same guy who designs TV remote controls specifically to piss me off”. I’d like to see the patent language reflect that.

  3. What’s the status of Facebooks patent application for “Dynamically providing email messages of a social network user to a WSJ reporter rather than the intended recipient”?

  4. What happened to prior art and novel inventive steps in patents? This is almost as daft as allowing Myriad to patent BRCA1 …
