This 3D modeling tutorial shows animators how to model a particular part of the male anatomy in squick-inducing detail, using found photos of packaged chicken drumsticks as a source material. It's nonsexual, but it may ick you out or turn you on, and I suppose it's NSFW though it's just human anatomy. The funniest thing is the instructor's deadpan delivery. (thanks, Eleanor Rigby!)

    …Actually, what I’d love to find is a basic tutorial on how to take a three-view and “carve” a basic model out of it on 3DS and Lightwave. My ex-before-last’s son is getting interested in 3D rendering, and while I’m pretty well versed in 3DS and LWO so as to render prexisting meshes, I’ve never been able to figure out how to lathe a square block into a complex shape using the same methods we used in woodshop.

    OM: “lathe” is in fact the term used in most programs, also, “spline modeling”.

    However, in 3D spline modeling you don’t start with a solid block and cut pieces off of it. You start with the curve, the profile that you would have carved out of that piece of wood. You literally “Turn” it, making a duplicate every X degrees until it’s done a complete 360, and if you’re using a program with scripted support for lathing, it will automatically link up the vertexes into a surface (or if you’re using vertexless models, do whatever it is your system does :D)

    Google Sketchup is pretty good for that sort of thing. It’s not really a full-fledged 3d program, but it has that sort of thing where you can grab an object and make 3d cuts in it, apply it on an axis, etc.

    These days subdivision modeling is king of the hill. The idea is that you start with a box, and gradually refine the shape by subdividing it and moving vertices, not carving away but adding surface complexity. The last stage of subdivisionis handled by the computer entirely, then tiny details like veins are done with displacement maps painted in an application like ZBrush or Mudbox.
