Obviously you're scared. For what other reason than cowardice would you so flippantly approve of the torture of untried suspects? Since the knowledge that this sort of thing goes on grants you peace of mind, despite any evidence casting doubt upon its efficacy as an information-gathering technique, it's certain worth doing.

Morals are for the brave of heart, I guess. Sleep tight.

So let's see....

The US tortures folks
The US destroyed the global economy
The US treats foreign visitors like crap
The US locks its own citizens up at a rate greater than China

Umm...yeah. We're the Evil Empire. We're the baddies. Next stop, skulls on our military uniforms. Oh...wait....

It's not just a question of "getting caught". We take such an indignant stand against other nations who do likewise, that this lessens any argument against it on a world stage.

As having been a subject of waterboarding (as part of my military training), I assure you that I would have said anything, made up anything or sold out anyone under the most limited duress of this kind (I only had to endure about five minutes of it. I can't imagine repeated sessions). It's quite ineffective at discerning "useful intelligence" over the long haul. I find it deplorable that we continue to enact these sorts of barbaric methods and parade our own values as noble. It's a sad state of affairs when so many Americans live in such abject fear that they'd turn a blind eye to torture.

BdgBill - People like you scare the crap out of me. Not only are you willing to judge people as guilty without benefit of trial, you'll happily let them be tortured? It is already known that the US has killed at LEAST 1 (I am sure there are more but only one springs to mind at the moment) innocent man who was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.

So tell me, what if that was your son, your brother, your father....you?

To be scooped up, beaten, tortured so badly that your muscles begin to liquefy, and asked repeatedly questions about things that you have no knowledge?

I'm sorry, it may even get be disemvoweled, but you are a HORRIBLE human being and are everything that the US is supposed to stand against.

The "it's either US or THEM" mindset ends up ruining us all: it's really "US vs. THEM vs. US."

I know a lot of Americans do not want to face up to the fact that this IS torture, and it IS evil, they're like a mother doesn't want to admit that her son is a criminal and murderer-- "No, not MY son, he's a GOOD boy!" It's a horrible blow to our egos and self-image to realize that we have become something reprehensible, but the sooner we admit it the better.

Did the average IQ of BoingBoing’ers just drop sharply? To all those turning this into a USA bashing post, you need to take a good long look at your world history. If you think other nations don’t engage in similar activities then you are being overly naïve. The only difference here is the USA got caught. We’re simply committing the oldest sins in the newest ways. Where is your disgust for the way women are treated in certain mid-eastern cultures or for the genocide of African nations or the ethnic cleansing done by eastern European governments (i.e. Slobodan Milosevic). Every culture, and I mean every culture, can be cited with examples of torture and murder when it suited their own agenda. I don’t care what country you call ‘home’, none are innocent and none have the right to stand on a moral soapbox and preach the virtues of their nation. We are all guilty, selfish, and ultimately concerned with only our own survival. I don’t condone what has happened in GitMo to those detained there but DO NOT attempt to pretend that you’re morally superior to anyone in the USA. Before you demonize this country try taking a look over your shoulder and see what skeletons lurk in your nation’s closet. Peace.

As others have pointed out, these may be completely innocent people. This is just fact that right-wing authoritarians need to square with their conscience somehow, if they are even capable of seeing the lies in propaganda about all Gitmo detainees being "the worst of the worst" who "rejoin Al Qaeda" when released. The fact is we have locked up and tortured several people who were COMPLETELY INNOCENT. Look up the names - google "Binyam Mohamed", we tortured him so bad waterboarding looks tame (we tortured his genitals).

This brings up stickier issues. Binyam Mohamed, a UK resident, was tortured under the watch (or assistance) of British intelligence officers, and he is using the UK government for their complicity in his torture. Unfortunately, Obama is sticking with a Bush threat that if the UK releases evidence of our torture in their courts we will cut off intelligence sharing with them - this threat was publicly delivered by Hillary Clinton to the British foreign Secretary (The Foreign Secretary then ordered Mohamed's trial shut down for national security reasons). So instead of "not having time for" trials of American war crimes, instead of "stepping aside and letting the judicial system work", Obama is actively involved in the cover-up of our war crimes. And as we learned form Nixon, the cover-up is just as bad as the crime itself.

Yes, we can all make pithy comments.

But what about actually doing something - join a human rights organization (Amnesty International works internationally against torture), at least write a pile of letters. Donate to groups that oppose torture.

Speak up folks, while we can!

I think it's just your IQ or at least your reading comprehension that has taken the hit. While I and many here condemn the criminals that did this and the government that shelters them, I have no illusions about the monsters in my own government, who as far as I can tell haven't stooped this low yet, but would if given the chance.

Besides, the crimes of another nation are never a valid excuse ever.

Cluephone for BdgBill: not everyone in Guantanamo is a terrorist, so your concern that torture techniques might "eventually" be used on non-terrorists is . . . naive, to say the least.

I was waterboarded once (almost twice) as a student in the Navy's SERE school, back in January of 1984 (ice water on a bare back early in the morning in the California high desert during winter is NOT fun).

From the article:

"U.S. soldiers, for example, were generally waterboarded with a cloth over their face one time, never more than twice, for about 20 seconds, the CIA admits in its own documents."

I spent a few minutes on the board (not tilted back from what I remember, as I've read in other accounts), and the actual duration of my dousings (at least two) were probably around the 20 second mark in total. I did in fact have a cloth over my face, first only over my mouth, and then over my mouth and nose.

I lasted longer than I've heard in other published accounts, but there were people in my class that lasted longer than me. Rather than give away any "secrets," I tried to break the leather straps that were holding my wrists and ankles. That didn't last long as the panic set in very quickly, so I gave them my Social Security number.

At some point during our training, we were told that our experiences were to show us what we might face if captured, and it was stressed that these were things the US wouldn't do to enemy POWs because we didn't want our own to be exposed to it. I do think it was a valuable experience and should be continued, in its toned-down version, for training purposes. To be honest, I'm glad I went through the experience that one time. It was a good test of my intestinal fortitude. As for using it for real, I'd say no. It's torture, and as a country, we tend to think of ourselves as rising above the rest.

I am so ashamed our my country right now.

I was raised to believe the US was different, better, more civilized than the rest of the world. That we were a shining example that would lift the rest of the world by example.

Look at the link to the American soldiers in the Philippines above. The soldiers are smiling and laughing while torturing a man. They are having fun.

Stanley Milgram is right. We are all capable of evil, and evil starts at 15 volts (minor acts).

You would want to be water boarded? I think I know what you're getting at, and it doesn't work that way.

Unfortunately, Obama is sticking with a Bush threat that if the UK releases evidence of our torture in their courts we will cut off intelligence sharing with them

The UK has already released it. The White House released a statement expressing its disappointment, and they're still making the same threat.

You missed the point of my post. The argument to condone or criticize torture is a non-issue. Obviously, I would assume that everyone here (myself included) would say that torture is bad and should be wiped from this planet. It’s like asking someone if they want clean water or contaminated water. It’s a weak argument. That’s not the issue I have. The issue is other posters on this thread (#2, #9, #14, #17, #19, or #28 just to name a few) seem so quick to demonize the USA. The posts are seething with a deeper hatred that is puzzling to me. By their logic any country that allows the mistreatment of individuals should be considered an ‘evil’ nation which would then include, I don’t know, maybe all nations that have ever existed. If they are so concerned with human rights maybe they should start on their own turf before looking over the fence. And as far as your government not stooping that low, remember, history is written by the winners. What was left out I wonder? I really didn’t intend this to turn into a pissing contest, it just fired me up a bit to see so many USA haters posting without taking into consideration the sins of the rest of the world as if the USA started the whole torture concept. So, let’s take a step back, take a deep breath and look at it for what it is. Was it a bad situation, yes. Would it be better if it had not happened, yes. Should those involved be punished, yes. Should our governments never use torture, yes. Are other governments engaging in similar activities, probably.

The good old US and A is now an evil empire. The rest of the civilised world knows this to be true. We're just waiting for someone less evil to get into power, like China or something.

Obviously, I share the horror at the thought of my country doing this.

Could someone point me to the source documents though? I read the article on Salon a didn't see any links to the CIA docs that were cited. I don't have a difficult time believing that this was documented, but it's hard to get too outraged without the primary source. Any help?

"without taking into consideration the sins of the rest of the world as if the USA started the whole torture concept"

And you miss the point that it does not matter what the rest of the world does or did. It's good to see that you know it's wrong but regardless of who did what where before, during or after us it is still wrong and EVIL. And guess what, under Shrub legitimate representatives of our country did evil. Does that make the whole country evil? No. But neither was all of Germany evil in WWII, just the neocons... er, Nazis.

I love America and hate to see it taken over by men and women of bad intent. That people are putting roadblocks in the way of prosecution of those involved in this when there was not excuse for it ever AND that people still defend this shows just how far towards full-on fascism this country has slipped. And I love America enough to point at that to defend what good there is left here.
