Sandal company Teva has a new product coming out in May called the Illum. It's basically a super comfy waterproof microsuede sandal with tiny LED lamps in the middle of each foot that lights up the path you're walking on. Pretty neat! I would have loved to have worn these when I went camping on the beach in Hawaii last year. The lights detach from the shoe and clip into a keychain, too, so you can use them to look at things other than what's in front of your feet. Available this spring for $60.

I'm a contributing editor here at Boing Boing. I also have a blog (TokyoMango), a book (Urawaza), and I freelance for Wired, Make, the NY Times Magazine, PRI's Studio360, etc. I'm @tokyomango on Twitter.

Shoe lights! And they called Al Bundy crazy.

  • Avram / Moderator

Aw, Haro beat me to it.

  • monstrinho_do_biscoito

ok, i misread that as “Flip flops that double as a fleshlight” i feel dirty now

  • Moriarty

Would be neat if it was charged by walking.

  • TJ S

Ha! And they all said convergence would center around the cellphone.

They called me crazy when I said everything would become part of your shoe, but look at me now! I’m not crazy at all!

    • Avram / Moderator

TJ S, just wait for the special Maxwell Smart edition!

  • dross1260

Can’t wait to see them used in a summer camp horror movie.

This is pretty cool. I didn’t even know shoes like this existed! Thanks for sharing!

  • Ernunnos

How about a light that just clips on to shoelaces, with an appropriately angled and protected LED?

  • Teller

Already own flip-flops with a beer opener in the sole. By the time night falls, I’m immobile – so lighting unnecessary.

  • Haro!

I’ve been reading Gizmodo too long because I read that as “fleshlight”.
Now all this needs is a phone a la Get Smart.

Teva makes fantastic (probably the bes) camping sandals, or “Tevas”, as I like to call them; they only need replacing every 5 years or so. I’ve gone through three pair in fifteen years. My fav style were the “Tevadactyls”, which sadly have been discontinued as of 1997 or so. I’m not sure I’d ever pay $60 for the Teva name on my flip flops though.

Blind gadget lust. I’ve always used the high-tech novel idea of a lantern or flashlight, in fact, I’ve been wearing a tiny LED version on a necklace for years. A waterproof Photon, which you can hold in your teeth if you need to use both hands. Have also used the exact same bottle opener for a lifetime. I’ve worn out several pairs of camping and hiking shoes, though.

The name of this, uh, ingenious product is pronounced exactly the same, and spelled almost the same as the last part of your small intestine… just before your colon: Ileum. I love their shoes, perhaps more, with a goofy name like this. Although you’re walking it it, perhaps the light will keep you from stepping in it.

now if they made the flashlights i could attach to my Rainbow sandals

  • IWood

i just set my feet on fire in the dark. problem solved.
