HiSmH.jpg This is so inappropriate I don't even know what to say. I doubt, however, that this really is a child's birthday cake, or even a real cake at all.

I'm a contributing editor here at Boing Boing. I also have a blog (TokyoMango), a book (Urawaza), and I freelance for Wired, Make, the NY Times Magazine, PRI's Studio360, etc. I'm @tokyomango on Twitter.

The Snowden Principle

The cake may not be a lie, but the wording almost certainly is — all the repeated letters are identical down to their orientation on the cake…

  • MattBD

I recently saw a car go past with one of those sun-blinds for children in the rear seat window, and although I only caught a glimpse of it I could have sworn the bear on it was Pedobear.

  • Anonymous

    i lol’d

  • Anonymous

AHAHAHA. This does take the CAKE.

  • Anonymous

I have seen a picture of this cake being given to someone here:
    http://www.i-am-bored.com/bored_link.cfm?link_id=48417
(you have to scroll down like half way – couldn’t find the original source, only seen it here).

So I guess it’s not a ‘shop, and I guess it proves it was at least shown to a child (whether or not is was actually a birthday cake though?).

    • Anonymous

Actually, while the pedobear cake might well exist, the image of the cake with the girl *is* a photoshop. You will notice that is a catbox with a fake icing turd on the side. There is some sign of the white around the pedocake. That is a giant novelty catbox turd cake. …Sooo… yeah.

  • Anonymous

Oh man, seriously? No one is going to go there? Fine, I’ll take one for the team. As dictated by the rules surrounding the pedobear meme:

    9?! Too old!

  • Krackatoa

Like Chevan said, the wording is a take on “Mudkipz”, so it’s not a far stretch to deduce that whoever had the cake made knew full well what they were getting on it.

It could also be a “Shooped” cake, as arkizzle pointed out.

    We’ll never really know…

  • flashdadi

Lisa, I know this is a blog and not journalism. But you could have at least attributed the source.

Or you could step up to the plate and write a post that answers:

    Who.
    What.
    When.
    Where.
    How.
    and…
    Why.

    Thanks. Bye.

    • Raj77

      Why?

      • arkizzle / Moderator

        “Why?”

        My thought exactly.

        flashdadi,

Here, I can’t find a good original source:
        http://www.tineye.com/search/b6da98e7416b6b75d8f9983795b987418cb29b2c

        • flashdadi

Raj77 I guess I may never be allowed to tell you “why”.

Twice I have tried to answer your why with postings that had:

“Opinions that move the debate forward.”

          I did:

“Disagree with what we or another commenter has to say? Let’s hear it!”

I believed I was “respectful”. Critical, but constructively so.

The mods say I was telling BB what to post and have not allowed my responses.

      • flashdadi

I have twice tried to reply.

Twice my response has been killed.

        So I too ask; “Why?”.

  • nauscopy

    Anyway…. it’s “heard.”

  • Anonymous

Obviously this isn’t a shop. Do you see any products being sold? Also, there are no pixels.

  • Anonymous

    Have some lulz …
    http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Pedobear

  • Anonymous

it’s a ‘shop. I can tell from the pixels and from having seen a lot of ‘shops in my time.

  • Maximillian

    Challenge accepted.

I wonder if I can just print out pedobear and bring it to the supermarket’s bakery or if I can email it…

  • peterbruells

Well, fuck them if they can’t take a joke…

    • Xenu

That should be “Fuck ‘em if they can’t take a joke, or they’re under 10 years old.”

  • Rob Beschizza

I know that irony makes anything funny, but this just takes the cake.

    • B_Roy

      Epic!

  • Hagrid

    THE CAKE IS A LIE!

  • Anonymous

This is the kind of dumb-funny shit that my friends in college would have done.

  • Johnny Cat

    MMMMMMM…… Cake!

  • Kylar

This was my birthday cake (August ’09)

    http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a53/kylararlin/caek.jpg

It was not a lie and it was also delicious :)

  • Anonymous

I’m totally doing this for my niece

  • flashdadi

    Now this is getting interesting.

I re-read the posting guidelines. I believe my posts comply.

So, oh great and all mighty moderator being, would you please tell my WTF is the issue?

    I ask with sincerity.

    TIA

  • Anonymous

    desutoys.com sells a plush pedobear.

  • flashdadi

Are my posts being deleted because I am critical of this post? ???!!!???

If not please tell me why you twice have deleted my responses to Raj77.

    • Antinous / Moderator

      • Please do not tell the Boing Boing editors what to blog. Writing “But that’s not a wonderful thing” is lame. So is “topic [X] bores me,” or “subject [Y] sucks.”

  • Big Daddy

And they misspelled the word “heard”! Reprehensible!

  • Michael1129

Oh my Go_____! lol, lol, lol! Hahaha! I’ve seen the same anime bear on YouTube! heehee, haha!

  • blueelm

It looks shop’d to me but then again I don’t see why you couldn’t have this done at a bakery either. Frankly it’s no one’s business why you’d want a pedobear cake.

  • warmlogic

What’s more offense to me than Pedobear (man, apparently I haven’t been keeping up with internet memes) is the spelling mistake. Or is that some kind of Pedobear-5p33k?

    • Chevan

The text has the format of the Mudkips meme, which goes “So I herd you liek mudkips.”

  • JohnCJ

Ok, this is disturbing. How many BoingBoing readers are /b/tards?

  • braininavat

I thought that what happens on 4chan stays on 4chan. I’m pretty sure its one of teh rules. I have a BB posting name but I’m not using it /b/cuz officially I’ve never heard of 4chan.

can it be boy tiem nao?

  • arkizzle / Moderator

“How many BoingBoing readers are /b/tards?”

More than is legal to admit.

  • flashdadi

Antinous, thank you for your reply.

Were you the mod who nuked my posts? Di you have the chance to read them>

Nowhere in my responses did I presume to tell BB what to blog.

I was, and am, critical of this post. In a manner that pointed out what I thought were its weakness in substance. And my critical posting is still up.

I was asked to justify that criticism.

I tried and was deleted. Twice.

I expressed an opinion of the quality and substance of the post.

I pointed out that posts such as this were the fodder of 4chan.

I expressed a hope that this type of post is not a trend.

BB took much more, lees constructive criticism for its “hillbilly punk” article. And BB took that criticism much better.

  • tamouse

It is entirely likely that someone doesn’t know who Pedobear is…

    • Lobster

To me this is like putting a pop culture reference in a kids’ movie. If the kid understands it then exposing them to it is hardly going to traumatize them. If the kid doesn’t, it’s just a cartoon bear. The adults might get a kick out of it. What’s the harm?

  • Raj77

I’d cause that to exist for slightly Anonymous friends in their 20s, personally. Easier to assume it’s a gag for an adult; why bother otherwise?

  • Mantissa128

Hmm, this is so 2009. You guys just saw this now?

    I feel old.

I have to admit it was funny though when he got included with the Olympic mascots.

  • IWood

This is a Bump. It is made of cake and perversion.

  • Taskbot

this is delicious cake. you must eat it.

  • JulianR

I also guess that the vast majority of the planet’s population is unaccustomed to nerdy netlore and thus also to the meaning of Pedobear. So, someone googled a bear picture, had it printed on a cake, end of story.

I wouldn’t make a fuss out of it, eat the damn thing at the party and maybe see to it that people who know the background don’t take pictures for the net and posterity to gloat about. It’s just a little unlucky guess blown completely out of proportion.

It’s not like someone had the Goatse picture printed on the cake, for example. Now that would be offensive. But to 99,9% of all people, that’s just a bear. Get over it.

    • peterbruells

Well, “Let them eat cake” usually does lead to bloodshed, though.

    • Mantissa128

      > Goatse picture printed on the cake

That, sir, is an incredible idea. I am picturing a Bundt cake with a suitable application of raspberry jam and icing.

      • JulianR

        :-)

    • adonai

@ JulianR – sorry to break this to you, but I’ve seen pics of a Goatse cake floating around the net :) Not only that, but it wasn’t a printed picture…it was fully rendered in 3D marzipan :D
And yeah, the Pedobear cakes have been around for a little while now. Not shooped. Presumably given to adults, one hopes…

  • slagmacg

I’m fair sure that this was a gift to a choirboy from his priest.

  • Anonymous

looks like a multiple-meme mashup. mudkipz + pedobear = so much win.

oh, almost forgot; rules 1 and 2, lisa.

  • Dangerpants

    this cake . . . is a lie.

    • Roast Beef

Dangerpants @17–I literally lol’d. That is all.

  • MollyMaguire

I rely on BB to learn about memes I am sure I would otherwise have never herd about. I had to look up pedobear, but now I know.

  • InsertFingerHere

I would send this to a convicted pedophile in jail, and make it read “So, you like ‘em young, eh?”

  • arkizzle / Moderator

I’m saying ‘shooped, for the way his elbow- and ankle-outlines darken the frosting on the left side of the cake.. *cough* ..and I can tell by the pixels.

  • arkizzle / Moderator

    flashdadi,

You yourself described your unpublished comment as “my longer reply answering [Raj77], stating that I found the post lame and too much in the style of a posting on 4chan.org”.

It and the comment I just quoted were unpublished for dickishly critiquing Lisa’s post, which Antinous pointed out is not something we condone. If the source was more important than your rant, you could have searched the image yourself or asked politely for it (instead, your opening salvo was all attitude).

[Edit: Let that be the end of it.]

    • Anonymous

But it is lame. Doesn’t that count for something?
