Very cool! It kinda reminds me of my friend Lee's work, except most of his stuff is more solid, since they are also puzzles.

Very sure. Look at the wood grains in the larger picture, they're all going in different directions.

George Hart is also a great teacher. I attended one of his workshops at RISD as part of Carl Fasano's Design Science course, a course based upon Dr Arthur Loeb's thirty years of work at Harvard. George Hart has a number of different projects that he can do with small and large groups and the experience of building a geometric object far outweighs the experience of looking at the same object.

One of the things we built was a giant Zomeworks construction that was bigger than a person. I'm looking at a photo of it now and the complexity of it is astonishing. His online encyclopedia of polyhedra is also very useful: http://www.georgehart.com/virtual-polyhedra/vp.html

The artist said that the design of the sculptures takes much longer than the actual construction and he uses laser and plasma cutters to save time and to get precise shapes. So, it actually wouldn't be all that arduous to do. He even has barn raising style assembly parties to put them together sometimes.

It is so beautiful! I love wood in housing and design. It beats polystyrene et alii hands down. It's because it's near to our ancient hearts.

Ignoring how difficult it would be to stain the individual sections so precisely if it were just carved lines, look at the wood grain for your answer.

Beyond the artist's statement that it's not (he says it's four different woods), you can clearly see the grain and it's definitely different woods and different orientations.

This piece is really cool; way cooler than it even looks at first glance. It's almost got an optical illusion thing going on with the various paths your eye can follow. Pick up on the yellow wood blocks as a path and the darker blocks turn into background. Pick up on the darker paths and the yellow blocks turn into background. Beyond that is the math to describe it. I bet the making of this was "interesting" in the sense of the purported Chinese curse.

Same here. I bet my version would get a good base going, just enough to tell it'll eventually be roughly spherical, then sit in a corner for a decade reminding me of my inadequacies before I throw it out in frustration. Maybe I should get started on that soon.

It's not really round on the top. What lousy craftsmanship. [The above comment is a joke, a criticism of all the yahoos who hang out writing comments against those of us who work hard to make stuff. Get a life]. Nice work George Hart, in that one piece you've done more than most people will do their whole lives.

If you draw an equilateral triangle and then bisect the angles with a super-sharp pencil and magnifying glass (which you will need when the angles get SERIOUSLY small), you will eventually end up with a perfectly modeled sphere, utilizing only straight lines. I have done this and it was magnificent.
