Ipad-Make-Size

What's the same size as the iPad, but even more wonderful? Why, the newest issue of MAKE, of course!

The latest issue of MAKE, Volume 22, is already wending its way across the planet and into the calloused hands of anxious makers. It will be available on newsstands on April 10th. We know we say this every time, but we think this one is a particularly awesome issue. The theme is "Remote Control Everything," and we cast a wide net in exploring everything from state-of-the-art radio-control (R/C) technology to controlling gadgets remotely over the internet.

Projects in the issue include building an R/C-controlled lawn mower, a cat toy that tweets when your kitty is playing with it, and a toy car you can control with your mind! (Okay, that last one involves a trick, but it's still cool.) You'll also learn about foamies, Frankensteining, and aqua modeling. What on earth are we talking about? You'll just have to get the issue to find out!

A four-issue subscription is just $24.95, or about 1/20th the cost of the cheapest iPad!

(Thanks for noticing the similar form-factors, Donald!)

But, as others have noted: how about Make FOR my iPad?

  • Nevermore

Excuse me, it’s Delia of course.

  • zikman

but… can I read it on my iPad?

  • Antinous / Moderator

I’m looking forward to “What’s the same specific gravity as an iPad” and “What’s the same albedo as an iPad” Maggie?

  • necaver

The radio looks to be from the mid-1920s

  • dagfooyo

And unlike the ipad, Make Magazine accepts 3rd party content, and is fully customizable!

Step 1. Using a screwdriver, pry the staples in the magazine apart.

Step 2. Carefully remove the pages

Step 3. Add your own pages and restaple. Simple!

What is the photo on the iPad?

    • jamiethehutt

I emailed Mark asking about the image and he was kind enough to send me a copy, and if you’d also like a copy I’ve uploaded it to http://www.annforfungi.co.uk/jamie/vintageradiogirl.jpg

      • Nevermore

Thanks for the image, it’s gorgeous! Do you have any background info on it? 1930s I guess from her dress and hairstyle, maybe there’s an expert on radios(?) who can provide more information?

Just for the love of geek, here’s Deliah Derbyshire fiddling the knobs: http://www.somethingrotten.dk/wp-content/delia_derbyshire1.jpg

I’ve probably checked this page 15 times looking for a link to that picture. This was going to be my last time, and I came ready to flame. Thanks Mark! Thanks jamiethehutt!

One of the first things I noticed when looking a the hi-rez version was that she has a wedding band on. “Damn, she’s married”, I thought, even though she’s very likely dead.

As apoxia mentioned the coupon offers no discount for non-US subscribers. #FAIL!

  • jamiethehutt

That’s actually not that bad a price, I mean National Geographic is about the same, but that provides high quality stores you cannot get else where. MAKE on the other hand doesn’t seem to have anything you couldn’t get browsing Instructables for an hour…

    • Mark Frauenfelder

Instructables is a terrific site, but it is not MAKE. The big difference is that Make re-builds the projects in our own workshop to make sure the instructions are clear and correct.

  • quickbrownfox

But, but, the iPhone is the antithesis of the maker’s manifesto! Right, Cory? Cory?

  • Avram / Moderator

And just like the iPad, Make is just something you can passively consume. You can’t use an issue of Make to print up your own magazine.

  • Xenu

I’m too lazy and fat to get out of my char. Is there a way to install a remote that will move my chair around?

More importantly, can I somehow use a remote to install said device?

Next up: remote controlled fork for easier eating.

  • Antinous / Moderator

Make is great even if you’re not a maker. For those of us who just want to look, it’s nice to have DIY porn that doesn’t involve hot-glueing lace to duck decoys for a change.

    • Stefan Jones

      “hot-glueing lace to duck decoys”

For a moment there I thought you were describing a really obscure fetish.

  • rikkus

Is making apps for the iPad bad or good? I can’t tell. Please help me form an opinion.

  • apoxia

Eeep, if I want MAKE posted to New Zealand the price doubles to US49.99, that’s NZD71.41! That’s NZD17.85 an issue. Now that’s a premium price!

  • coyotebob

I followed the subscription link, subscribed and got a receipt for being charged $34.95, not $24.95. Called the Make subscription line and got a rude woman who told me that there was no such thing as a $24.95 subscription and that I had to call back in two days to get a refund.

Called today and was told that the $24.95 subscription was from 2005 and they would have to refer me to corporate to see if I could get the $24.95 rate.

I cancelled my subscription. I feel like they were On the Make, not Make.

    • Mark Frauenfelder

Bob — please email me. I’m sorry this happened and I want to find out what the problem was. Mark@boingboing.net

I really like that picture on the iPad. It’s strangely beautiful. Will you share a link to a copy of it, please? Is there anything historical about it?

  • Nevermore

Same question as #11. Lovely image!
