This desk, designed by Roderick Vos of the Netherlands, is made to look like an Art Deco skyscraper. It's a bit much for my liking, but fun to look at.

The technology that links taxonomy and Star Trek

I agree with obscuromancer, it looks more De Stijl. I’d love to see pictures your room LightningRose. Ever since I was in grade school I’ve been an avid deco-punk.

  • sapere_aude

I love Art Deco. (In fact, I love most varieties of early-to-mid-20th century Modernism.) But this I don’t love. Clearly not Art Deco, or even particularly Deco-esque in my opinion. I wouldn’t really call it De Stijl-esque, either; though it’s certainly much closer to De Stijl than Deco. But at least Lisa didn’t call it “steampunk” as Cory probably would have done. ;-)

  • AllisonWunderland

    Not BauHaus, that’s for sure . . .

  • Terry

    Umm…. Where do you sit?

    • Felton

Maybe you don’t sit so much as perch.

  • scifijazznik

How did this make it off the page and into reality? Put me in the “where do you sit?” camp. Even if you sit Indian style or happen to be a paraplegic and do sit in the most obvious place, you can’t place this desk against a wall because the teardrop protrudes in the wrong direction.

And, more importantly, where do you put your computer? The useless, u-shaped scrotum pouch shelf hangs down too low. I can’t figure why you would want a curved shelf dangling in front of your face to begin with. What am I supposed to put there?

I’ve seen some pretty spectacular and ambitious first year design school failures before, but this makes no sense. It’s almost as if the person who designed it never actually used a desk. It takes up a lot of space for something that offers so little in the way of utility.

  • lasttide

If he removed the bottom bar from the front of the teardrop main section, it might qualify as a desk. However, it:
    1. is L-shaped away from the user in any setup I can imagine
    2. has minimal useful surfaces, shelves, or drawers. U-shaped shelves are not a good idea.
    3. the lights are optimized for seeing the top of nothing. Potentially good for moths, and little else.
    4. can’t sit against a wall in any configuration

  • Iggmf

To answer the “Where do you sit?” question (which I had myself), if you click on the link you see that it’s actually a shelving unit, not a desk.

  • Anonymous

I’m solidly in the ‘where do you sit?’ camp. But it does look quite cool. Make the main surface a bit higher (and remove the scrotum) and this would make a very striking bar, assuming you don’t mind having all your bottles and glassware out in the open.

On second thought, that’s a lot of ifs and mods. Maybe file it under good concept, poorly implemented.

  • Zadaz

Barely art deco and I’m no seeing the skyscraper at all.

But I think it’s totally awesome and would fit in my living room perfectly.

  • Hattmannen

Maybe it doesn’t have to be functional. Art deco or not, I still think it’s beautiful. People seem to be too obsessed with functionality now adays. Perhaps it could be a semi-functional piece of art for your livng room?

  • obscuromancer

Not so much Art Deco, more De Stijl.

  • ikoino

I see using it to play 3D chess with my hyper-dimensional friends:

  • Teller

For Piet’s sake that looks uncomfortable.

  • douglassarine

    Art desko indeed.

  • Sawyertrice

    yeah, that’s pretty hideous.

  • arikol

I find it pretty. Probably pretty useless.. (Pun, yay!)

  • LightningRose

As someone who collects Art Deco/Streamline Moderne and has her bedroom (except the Cal King bed that didn’t exist in 1930) done in Art Deco, that doesn’t much look like any Art Deco I’ve ever seen.
