Tavie sez, "You have to be impressed by this student film, 'After Today Live'. These kids made an incredibly detailed shot-by-shot remake of the Goofy Movie's opening song, 'After Today' (the hero's 'I Want' song) with live actors instead of animation."

It's impressive work indeed! All produced for $100, too!

Amazing Shot-for-Shot Remake Goofy Movie - After Today Live (Ted Sowards) (Thanks, Tavie!)

Previously:
  • Goofy Movie, by David Lynch

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

While technically they did a great job reproducing the cartoon as live action; it was horrible to watch and listen to anyway.

Damn you “Glee” and Highschool Musical”, damn you to Hell.

I much prefer the Perfect Strangers intro redone in Seattle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8j09urzIeM

Next on Boing Boing: Students face lawsuit from Disney for copyright violations.

Copyrights are more lenient specificly for student films; those are categorized under “educational purpose” even though the educational value is in making the film rather than wiewing it.
You might call it a loophole, but since the net result is a larger number of qualified filmmakers it all works out for Big Entertainment Biz as well, so nobody has bothered to challange it.

As for the reaction over at Mouse Headquaters, I’m pretty sure that Kevin Lima must have gone “Squee!” when he saw it.

  • bmcraec

Technically brilliant, and a very confident effort. I too wonder if the discussions at the house of mouse will involve “should we sue?” or the PR value of a mashup like this will be seen as beneficial.

It’s really sad that the first thought that passed through my mind was “Wow, I hope those kids don’t end up getting lawyered up.” ANyone not the visual allusions in the Disney storyboards as well? Maybe James Cameron will need to sue Disney for using the “King of the world” geometry for Max standing by the chain-link fence.

  • Animeditor

Greg Perler, the editor of the original film, saw the piece and said, “Must be the Glee effect on them, too!” Go animation fans, go!

  • Animeditor

I say, Huzzah! This is no different that those of us who recreated scenes from Jaws or Star Wars back in the 70s with our parent’s Super-8 cameras. These students are using art they enjoy to teach themselves the language of filmmaking. Whether or not you dig the movie, these kids obviously do. Some of them will go forward to make their own stuff. To borrow and modify from the Mouse again, Circle of Life, baby. Circle of Life.

  • VonRiesling

Excellent effort. I’m skeptical of the $100 camera. You can’t get decent green screen with that, and this vid has decent green screen. Also green/blue screen costs money even if you use paint. I believe it was low budget, but not that low.

They borrowed the camera…the hundred dollars as spent elsewhere.

  • Chentzilla

They had Goth girls in 1995 already?

    • dicebourbon

Goth’s been around since the early 80s. The scourge of every high school.

    • MelSkunk

Oh heck yes. I was too old for this movie (but not Goof Troop when it came out, so this amused the heck out of me) but I remember goth in 1995, that was my first year in highschool.

Now I’m going to have to watch the movie in question. I love 90′s cartoons!

saw a post about this on cartoon brew a few weeks ago, apparently theres been a bunch of them made, possibly for a class at a school? anyway, their article has some pretty good comments http://www.cartoonbrew.com/disney/a-goofy-movie-remade-in-live-action.html
