Indeed, at the University where I work the default is unlocked, so if you forget your keys on the evening or weekend you just need to hope that the power has gone out at some point since Friday. Makes the good old lock and key seem more reasonable.

I wonder what *IS* new and wonderful in the world of locks? My next house, I don't want keys.. I want a little fob and a swipe pad. It works in offices, why not the home? Normal locks can be bumped so easily, and the deadbolt in the middle isn't very effective in keeping a door closed. Not a fan of the number pads on door handles though, and those fingerprint readers are useless.

Hmmmm... seems like water would flow into that lock quite easily. That would cause problems in colder climes.

That first pic's tech is about as old as brick and stone castles. They were originally made that way so drunk folk could easily find their key in the hole while stumbling through dark and gloomy halls. [/Rick Steves - Travel Nerd]

My age-addled brain tells me that Wimpy used this same trick in a Popeye cartoon trying to put a key in the door of an idling car which was vibrating so significantly that he couldn't do it otherwise.

From your post, it sounds like you want an RFID passkey system.

They have their own perils and pitfalls. If they default to an open position, all one needs do is force the system to reset or reboot. If they default to a locked position to prevent such attacks being effective, you have added user annoyance or even endangerment when the system crashes or the power goes out. Imagine you wake up to an electrical fire in your home and all your doors are magnetically sealed and unresponsive to your keys.

"Security tokens" and similar passkeys with embedded RFID tags can be read and copied just as easily as a normal key can be pressed into a blank. They're also typically not as sturdy as a standard key, and are more easily damaged or destroyed.

No matter what kind of lock you have, ultimately if someone wants to get into your home they will find a way to either defeat or circumvent your locks. All locks ever do is deter amateurs and annoy home owners.
