  Bieber is a triumph of marketing. I’m a music teacher from his home town, where he finished second in the local talent competition the year before he got his big break. There are far more talented Canadian kids than this one. Violin prodigy Henry Lau is one of them:

  I confess that I didn’t know who he was until I came across a video of Australian tv show he was on where he didn’t understand a fairly simple question posed to him (google “bieber german”). And that’s pretty much the extent of my knowledge on him.

  @cjp – Henry Lau is impressive. He’s got pop flare, but a base line set of talents to back it up. Do you have any less edited, more raw footage of him available?

    I would add that Henry Lau is currently a pop star in China and South Korea. He made an appearance on Korean boy band Super Junior’s song Don’t Don and then was subsequently drafted into their China sub unit, Super Junior-M. So the lure of pop has touched him as well as the Bieb.

    Yes,here’s another Lau video. The kid speaks six languages, apparently. He’s a product of the Royal Conservatory music system, which is the gold standard in Canada. BB ran an article a while back about the need for kids to develop ‘skill’. This is what my mother was trying to tell me all of those years! I can play, but not like this…

  LOL! The first time I ever saw his face on a magazine, my first thought was “Who’s that middle-aged lesbian, and why is she on People’s cover?”
  Yes, he’s surely just another mediocre, over-produced flash in the prepubescent pan, who’s best hope is that he’ll have the sense to save his money and “retire” to University and a life of comfy obscurity instead of pulling a Lohan before he hits 25.
