Lisa K tells me that presenting daily news-as-Manga is far from a new phenomenon in Japan, but Manga No Shimbun is a new Web site devoted to the form. According to Wired, "the site employs more than 100 manga artists to cover breaking stories, updating 10 or 15 times a day." Manga No Shimbun

    As someone who long read Scott McCloud’s comic theory books, I always wondered how you would make news comics. News manga does seem rather interesting in this regard., some seem to have data dumps in them, others are tightly clustered collages of ideas. It seems very interesting.

    I’ve been a fan of this site for a long time – and if you’ve ever tried sifting through a Japanese newspaper… well.. it’s a bit of a chore until you acquire a lot of specialized vocabulary. The manga shinbun makes current events a lot more accessible (and fun!) to non-technical readers.

    I used to read the English version of Mainichi Shimbun online. They had a crazy translator who turned every story into a series of raunchy jokes. Sadly, they fired him/her, apologized for about three months and became excruciatingly dull.
