David sez, "Neil Gaiman posted this beautiful Lovecraft-inspired ukelele on Twitter."

Cthulkhelele

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

You can’t see the strings because they only exist in noneuclidean dimensions.

    • Tgg161

Sometimes I wish blogs had digg/reddit-style comment voting, because the comment about the strings being only visible in ‘noneuclidean dimensions’ is a winner.

  • rhys

you removed the strings?? YOU FOOL!! you were warned NEVER REMOVE THE STRINGS~~! (or cross the streams!!)~~!!! Now we’re ALL DOOOOOOOOMED!!!! aaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiii ftang !

  • lasttide

Is this what cute girls strum on in R’lyeh? (note: despite reality, in my mind all uke players are cute girls due to overwhelming open-mic-night-based evidence).

    • nickodemus

Not all of us are cute… Or even girls for that matter. Look on youtube for “As my ukulele weeps”

If you even slightly dislike ukuleles, he’ll change your mind.

    • kevinsky

Only cute little girls play Ukelele? I think Isreal Kamakawiwoʻole would disagree with you, if he was still alive! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1bFr2SWP1I

  • lasttide

In his house at R’lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits while making a YouTube cover of Lady Gaga’s “Telephone”.

  • EggyToast

But how does it sound? It looks like it needs some new strings…

  • vealchart

i think i saw one of those at House On The Rock

  • Clifton

I didn’t know Erich Zahn made ukuleles as well as violins.

  • stalkingcat

In the interests of giving credit where credit is due, what Neil Gaiman posted were actually pics sent to Amanda Palmer.

The pictures were actually originally posted by @raliel: http://twitter.com/raliel/status/18917333408 and http://twitter.com/raliel/status/18917459858

  • Videogamedesigner

dang thats an awesome guitar… but i cant see the strings.. is it playable ?

  • Anonymous

Does Cthulhu surf and enjoy pakalolo as well ???

  • Anonymous

That is so full of win
    /and evil

  • marginalia

Yep, it belongs to Robin, @raliel going to string it and see if it’s playable in a couple of days!

  • Anonymous

excuse me mr. gaiman, but, fail. this is obviously the goatse.cxulele, i mean, come on. look at it!

  • agraham999

Whatever…you should see my Flying Spaghetti Monster harmonica.

Tiptoe Through the Tulips, ON THE PATH TO MADNESS!!!

  • Targe

You can tell this is genuinely related to dread Cthulhu because the Necronomicon’s title is set in Papyrus..!

    AWESOME uke though.

I own that book. It’s a pretty decent collection of Lovecraft stories. British import. One of the more complete volumes I’ve seen. Little pictures of horribly unspeakable things, the usual stuff. Frakking fatter than the bible too lemme tell you. Big doorstop of a thing. A little awkward to read. Sort of like the pretty obvious racism in some Lovecraft stories.

  • Moriarty

A Lovecraftian homemade ukele posted by Neil Gaiman? Glue some brass gears onto that thing, and you’ve got yourself the perfect Boing Bait(tm).

  • Maurice Faustrillo

What the world needs know is a Cthuluzela … demanding a remix of this zombie vuvuzela video

    ukuthulhu is jealous!

  • nanuq

Is this the Dread Ukelele of Doom(TM)? Will playing it drive men to madness and bring on the Apocalypse? When does the CD come out?

  • Anonymous

Ia! Ia! Shub-Niggurath! The goat with a thousand young!

  • Stefan Jones

Wow. Mark goes on vacation and Boing Boing’s ukulele coverage takes a dark, dark turn!

  • JoshP

I look at that and I can only see this mental image of neil sitting in a posh Victorian drawing room, in front of a fire, smoking a nicely aged meerschaum while strumming it. He’s draped in the purple velvet jacket, hair whispy, and his feet are propped up on AFP as a human footstool, who’s pouting.
Nice kit. The Ukelele that Played the End of The World.

No ukes present, but both are still rather relevant:

I’ve since looked for it, but w/o success.
