Following up on yesterday's post about a fantastic metal moose sculpture outside a roadside eatery, an observant Boing Boing reader points us to its origins: the creation is apparently the work of sculptor Brad Turner, and was part of a moose art competition called the Bennington Moosefest. Some of the other entries in this contest were pretty fun, too.

I had noticed the moose before, since it’s located about a mile from my home. Today I visited with Nikon in hand, to record our new local celebrity.

I, reveal-er of the moose’s secret, am happy to be of help.

Not saying I saw every one (we did see a lot of them on a “moose hunt”), but my faves were Robo and the two in front of Madison Brewing Company in Bennington. The two in front of the brewpub were nicely painted by the owner.

The photo mosaic moose (I forget the moose’s name) gets an honorable mention, as each little photo was hand pasted to make the mosaic!

An “interesting story”: one of the moose was vandalized – found knocked over, broken off its legs. Sad. This guy came forward and explained, he was really drunk, running, not paying attention (duh), and plowed it over with his pickled self. He apologized, offered to pay any damages, and further explained that he meant no malace to the moose. Moose restored!

I live in Bennington and remember when the Moosefest was going on. It was mostly a gimmick to bring in tourists to make money off of and it seemed to have worked at the same. There are still many of them all over town and people will slow way down in their cars to take photos of them.

Only problem though is that their legs are way too short!

Back around the turn of the century, Toronto had a moose statue competition that saw 326 mooses distributed around the city. Type “Toronto moose statues” into google to see pictures of them. My favourite is Venerable Moose – who is still down in Chinatown: see “Toronto chinatown moose”.

Reminds me of the “singing” bronze bull they used in ancient Greece to torture and execute people.

Thanks for sharing this competition. My favorite is probably Morpheus.

Thanks for the Update Xeni.. It appears they had a template for the moose, but still looks like a LOT of work by Mr. Turner. The setting was a hoot we thought, and an LED implant would seal the deal.
