Over at our Submitterator, BB pal Gareth Branwyn points us to Racer, Malte Jehmlich's real world R/C car "video game." It consists of a fantastic cardboard racetrack and arcade game cockpit. The driver sitting in the cockpit looks at a POV display of a camera mounted on the vehicle. Racer 0.2 (via MAKE: Online)

The technology that links taxonomy and Star Trek

You know those toy cars that flips over when they hit walls, and then automatically flips right side up? He should modify the cars so that they automatically flip back when they accidentally turn over.

Next up, mounting the camera in a real car and taking a spin around town!

  • DrPretto

Next Step: Make it a multiplayer online video game with a gigantic racetrack.

    • Nadreck

It’d be a great way to make arcade gaming a spectator sport!

      • DrPretto

Well, what I tried to say is they should keep the live video signal, but instead of having to wait to use the arcade, you could play the game in your house via online and controlling the car live with some joystick.
I think the inventor’s idea is good, he should find some investors to make it better.

  • Cowicide

Oh man, this is cool, thank for the link BB!

  • Lobster

The graphics are OK but the physics modeling is WAY off. ;)

You guys are thinking way too small.

Think RedBull UAV challenge or R/C F1. No more boring safe tracks. No more roll cages, crumple zones or airbags. Lean, powerful vehicles that can be driven recklessly fast.

It’s be like the motoring equivalent of allowing performance enhancing drugs in sport – dangerous but man! the audience would love it!

  • Anonymous

    this has potential.

  • Cowicide

Did he mention anywhere if he’s going to allow play over the Internet? I’d pay a small fee for that.

  • David Pescovitz

Those cars are fake. I can tell by the pixels.

  • MarkM

    Needed:
    Some sort of scoring ability.
    Self-righting ability for car.
Ability for game to determine if car is going “wrong” way on track and withhold points.

  • LightningRose

Awesome. Lately I’ve waxing nostalgic for the 1:24 slot cars my brother and I used to race in the mid 60′s. This could be the next gen commercial track.

Center of gravity is too high!

They used to have a similar thing, except with several drivers, at Disney Quest! at Disney World.

needs banking to be able to corner better… they should smooth the interface between the track and the sides so you can use the sides to go round faster…
