Just got back from doing this actually. One of my monthly rituals is to head to the comic shop in the next city over (not so no one will see me, but because the best shop i've ever been to is there. <a href="http://www.chapelhillcomics.com>Chapel Hill Comics). I always pick up a few things on my list and head to a coffee shop down the street to read an issue or a new volume of a trade.

Whenever I buy my mags, inevitably the chap behind the counter begins to place them in a black plastic bag, which I've come to think of as a "porn" bag. I still have to remind the guys, despite being a regular for years, that I'm happier walking around with my mags in plain site than I am walking around with a porn bag.

I'd be happier walking around with porn in plain sight than walking around with a porn bag. I might not be good about taking reusable bags with me to Trader Joes, but if I was buying porn I'd sure bring my own bag rather than parade about with one of them black porn bags.

Can't say I read comics in public every day...but I certainly don't think twice about it on the days that I do.

http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/2008/01/23/18-awareness/

"An interesting fact about white people is that they firmly believe that all of the world’s problems can be solved through “awareness.” Meaning the process of making other people aware of problems, and then magically someone else like the government will fix it.

This belief allows them to feel that sweet self-satisfaction without actually having to solve anything or face any difficult challenges. Because, the only challenge of raising awareness is people not being aware. In a worst case scenario, if you fail someone doesn’t know about the problem. End of story."

Personally I read comics in public quite a lot, here in the UK. I like to jump on the London Underground, whip out my latest purchases and get reading.
Unfortunately, no one has ever paid attention to my reading habits. It's not the done thing on the underground, despite having the highest public density and being plainly obvious to everyone around me that I'm doing something 'abnormal.'
If anyone can think of somewhere I could read in public where someone might be interested in what I'm doing, I'd quite happily go there and do it. Although I feel handing out free comics in public would achieve a lot more than simply reading them.

Hey, I will definitely do my bit....my choice would be Asterix and Tintin to some extent. I will read both at campus, at bus, in the canteen, at office...let me see where else I can! Quite an interesting job for me.

Tits or blood filled comics are more likely to be noticed.

I gave my girlfriend a copy of we3 for reading while on the plane, and she got some really strange looks from the neighbors. But at least they looked.

I tried to like comic books. I really did.

Same here. I don't DISlike comic books, but frankly, when I'm reading fiction I prefer the pictures my brain makes to the ones someone else drew.

Honestly I don't really like this idea, it implies people might be embarrassed to do so anyway. And reading comics in public isn't so uncommon. In New York, depending on the line, pretty much every subway car has at least one person reading a comic of some sort.
