" Let's hope she is taken to a facility and given appropriate treatment until such time that she understands that tossing live cats into trash cans is unacceptable. "

She knew what she did was unacceptable, notice in the video that she makes sure no one is watching her before she tosses the cat in the bin. If she thought it was acceptable she wouldn't have worried about witnesses. She knew it was wrong, but she did it anyway.

The video was posted and gave a location, people started scouring photos of people in the area on places like facebook until they found a match and then narrowed it down.

Keep in mind that when police departments, or even governments are looking for people they have a team of what, 5 people? 10 people? 100 maybe? And those are people working at a job, so they are taking breaks to go to the bathroom, smoke a cigarette, get lunch, etc. On the other hand, 4chan is hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people who are bored and won't stop until they find what they are looking for... or until someone posts a funny .gif

So do you propose that she go unpunished if the legal system fails to punish her?

I'm glad she's afraid for her life. Let that be a lesson to her. She got what she deserved. How do you think the cat felt? The cat could have suffocated.

When I first read the post I thought "she is now under police protection" was referring to the cat.

"Also, where are these alleged death threats? If they're being posted at 4chan, then someone drop a link on us (I won't hold my breath)."

You can't link to things on 4chan, the site is realtime with no archives, so if you don't see it when it's happening you can't go back and see it later.

Mm hmm. Tell me again, Boing Boing bloggers, why you're not in favor of ubiquitous surveillance? Or is it only right to have access to personal information when you have the freedom to use it irresponsibly?

I have seen Little Brother, and it is 4chan.

"In my mind that's not a valid replacement. I can't empathize with a small furry four legged creature that might be as smart of a 2 or 3 year old. "

Some people can't empathize with toddlers or babies. Does this justify them in tossing them in bins?

Seriously, personal feelings aren't a good source for a legal system.

"Really? She should be forcibly held in a facility, treated (somehow) to re-educate her until she's nice to animals? That's ridiculous."

It would be nice if she were given treatment until she was nice to animals, but making her realize it's wrong to torture them should be enough.

I have two problems with your question:

1. You assume the Boing Boing writers are opposing every single instance of surveillance and that they do not distinguish from government-controlled surveillance networks, single establishment-based surveillance, and private surveillance.

2. You also assume that it is a black and white-only issue where you either is with the terrorists/pro-surveillance/something or with us (the good guys).

No two wrongs don't make a right, but i have a kitten and if this was my cat, shed need more then police protection. Why should that poor innocent cat, that she petted to gain its trust SO she could dump it in a bin, have to suffer and then people think she deserves justice done rather then revenge. I adore my kitten and i'd want revenge. Damn whether its right or wrong. And as people say, the law cannot punish her, so frankly, i'm glad that she was victimised and afraid. I don't believe in victimising without proof ( she was caught on tape) or ex-cons or people that been punished and done there time. If she hadn't have had a taste of good old mob mentality she wouldn't have recieved any punishment at all. So i say bloody good job mob bet she won't offend again.

To #5 that said that vigilantism isn't the solution:
Of course it is. Animal abuse charges don't go much of anywhere until someone kills an animal, or harms the animal to the point of needing serious medical attention. To a person that throws a cat out (even though the cat could've died, it didn't) so she'll get a $200 fine and authorities will walk through her house to see if she's abusing other animals. If 4chan was responding to people who look like Jersey Shore cast or something to that effect where no harm is being done, I'd be against it. But they are being vigilante to someone who is cruel. I support it. I'm also done with this long-winded, run on reply.

>> Synonymous to the ears of vigilantes, perhaps.

What's a vigilante?

You're arguing for rule of law from one side of your mouth and ignoring rule of the law with the other side. And all with your "eyes wide open."

You are a vigilante.

>> And yet, the law is the law. It may not appeal to you personally, it may not serve the interests of a community, but it is established, it is "put to paper," unlike vigilantism.

That is the saddest, most defeatist, and pathetic defense of society I have ever beheld.

>> To assume moral authority and take revenge makes you no better than an animal.

You're like a one-man cliche machine. "The law is the law." "Revenge makes you no better than an animal." You're Jack Webb.

I think you've heard all of those platitudes your entire life, but have never taken time to examine them. "The law is the law." What is that?

And then you follow up by saying you have no "hang-ups" (Christ, another cliche), therefore you are an animal.

That doesn't ameliorate the necessity for evidence of some sort. 4chan is not immune to copy/paste or archiving either from users, viewers, law enforcement, this woman, her attorneys, family, or friends. Presumably, if she is receiving death threats and presumably if the police were assigned to protect her based on these death threats (and my understanding is that's not the case, though that's the portrayal in the press. Rather, police "control" was assigned to manage media personnel in front of her home. It has been erroneously and irresponsibly characterized as police protection from tabloids and tabloid-like press), then one would assume that someone had a means to show these threats to law enforcement, unless, as you say, the police were looking over her shoulder when the shadowy and unrecordable 4chan was allegedly swearing murder upon this dear lady.

I'm saying there is no record, no quotes, and no links because it is myth, deception, or hysterical rhetoric. I'd love to be proven wrong.

But the hyperbole and innuendo is flying hot and heavy over this (just like the Assange dust-up). I'd just like to see basic sourcing given a hearing in this entire clusterfuck. Not unreasonable, I assert.

There's a distinct difference between a small group of people in a position of authority having extensive surveillance capabilities over the population, and individuals having surveillance capabilities over their own property (which is what happened here - the cat's owner has cameras on his property, used the tape to find out how his cat ended up in the bin, shared the tape).

I mean if you were receiving death threats and the entire Internet was allegedly so scandalized as to rise up and threaten murder, don't you think you'd *MAYBE* have the presence of mind to take a couple of screenshots and post them to a blog, FB, or some venue that would allow people to see the kind of harassment you were being forced to endure?

"maybe you can hire The /b/ Team"

Ah, but you forget: "/b/ is not your personal army." Especially if it does not care for your particular problem. So, unless it involves a cat being harmed intentionally by a person, don't count on any help on request.

Most of the targets /b/ goes after are identified after having a lead due to some kind of online presence on the part of the targeted person. This case appears to be different.

How did they do it?

This is a group of people who use a combination of technical skill and crowd sourcing to accomplish all kinds of goals. Given the near total anarchy of 4chan, this is quite amazing.

According to Moot, 4Chan has over half a million unique hits in a 30 day period. It is quite likely that given the slightest bit of information about a person, they could track that person down if :
-That person lives in a westernized moderately populated area
-There is sufficient motivation for 4chan to care.

Justice vs Revenge?

Just because a punishment is meted out by a sanctioned authority does not make it justice.
Just because a punishment is meted out otherwise does not make it revenge.

Is it justice for this woman to not be charged for (what i assume is) a criminal act?
Is it revenge for this woman to be outed in her community for the cruel and inhumane actions she has taken?

Proportional punishment is justice, regardless of the source. It is necessary as a warning for others who would consider anti-social behavior.

Please remember to give credit to "Trotsky from Boing Boing" when you refer to this woman as "Osama Bin Lady."

I made that up.

It's MINE, bitches!

Mind you, I am not condoning the nutjobs who are sending death threats and other extreme responses.

But a measured and proportional punishment is appropriate, whatever the source.

Yes, your logic is correct. A kitten is not a toddler.

However, so many studies have shown that sociopathic behavior often starts as animal cruelty before escalating to violence against humans, it is generally accepted as a fact (well, as close as anything in the realm of psychology can be a fact)

Outing this vile old hag for what she is could prevent future violence. Hell, its a lot more likely than the idea that invading foreign countries will prevent people from hating the US enough to try to blow up buildings.

The meta- issue here - an in other instances of /b/ and 4chan action - is why internet social groups feel like taking action - because we don't feel anyone else will or can, especially the governing bodies that were supposed to. I like that there's a social conciousness - people like this woman obviously need a Big Brother. Same thing with that wretched 11-year old girl who was abusing and threatening to shoot people- her parents, community, friends, and society hadn't taught her caution, courtesy, or manners - but 4chan and /b/ did. Where all those groups failed in both these cases /b/ stepped in. And I'm glad they did. The cat certainly couldn't defend itself.

So she's in fear for her life, in police protection. Not knowing when--or if--she will emerge from the darkness.
Hmmm. Reminiscent of a certain cat?

I think people are sick of watching Animal abusers getting away with a slap on the wrist. Until these animals get real justice, I am happy with the angry mob justice.

It is the governments fault that it has come to this.
