That is, in both cases, the fact that the "luxury" or the "steampunk" is a thin veneer over exactly the same guts that are inside the hundreds of thousands of boring injection molded ABS covered units in the field.<br><br> Because of the extremely high design and tooling costs(compared to the extremely low marginal cost of producing the N+1th unit), having an actual "luxury" electronic device, that isn't horribly inferior to the mass produced ones, might well be a million+ dollar project in some product categories. This makes it perfectly understandable that such unique products largely don't exist; but the ones that do are no less disappointing for it.
