@ #13

Very possible. Any substance that elicits as strong a reaction as MDMA can lead to negative reactions whether it's physiologic sensitivity/allergy(never heard of anyone allergic but it's possible) or simply emotional/psychological freakout. Open your mind sir.

"You know what it's like, Mr. Fox. You're at a party, it's late, somebody starts passing around weaponized hallucinogens..."

Ecstasy seems pretty tame both in relation to Bane's steroids and to Scarecrow's pharmacopia. And what about Joker gas?

I'm just saying that if you want to write about killers, E is about the last drug to use as a scapegoat. Meth, yes. Alcohol, for certain. but E? highly suspect.

Now, if you wanted to write about the perils of all-night dancing and dehydration, then you've got a story.

I remember reading this back in the day when it came out. Favorite character drawn by my favorite artist yet the message still bugged me. Re-read it a few years ago after experiencing MDMA for real and just had to laugh at it. Still, it's very sad that they had to use Ecstasy as their scapegoat. What is interesting to me is not 10 months earlier in the same comic, Batman encountered a new designer drug called "Fever" (http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Fever_%28Narcotic%29) that was much more logical in it's approach and even tho it was a fictional narcotic, it dealt with the known problems of drugs/psychotropics in a much better way. Even for a comic book.

Fast forward 8 years and in Shadow of the Bat #56-58 Batman encounters Poison Ivy working for the Floronic Man making a "super advanced marijuana" that he wanted to get everyone in the world stoned so he could take over. The story does the normal "just say no/drugs are bad" route for the most part but in the end the conclusion is very ambiguous. One could easily assume there was a conflict between editorial mandate to make this story vs. writers going "but its just weed!"

[Someone on a bad ecstacy trip probably] Had underlying or pre-existing problems which remained hidden in their sober state, but came out under the emotional outpouring that is common for some takers of X.

Well, yeah, but there you go. Peanuts and shellfish are great too unless you die from an allergic reaction the first time you eat them. A bad trip is a bad trip is a bad trip.

Besides, so-called paradoxical reactions are quite common in drugs that affect the brain. That's why the fine print on every box of sleeping pills says "MAY CAUSE SLEEPLESSNESS." Stimulants make people drowsy sometimes, too. Antidepressants very frequently make people more depressed, etc. etc.

This isn't directed at any one comment here, but with all the blistering stupidity of the War On Drugs mentality (and BOY is there a lot of it) it's easy to forget that psychotropic drugs are not inherently good things. Rave kiddies and stoners are frequently adorable and worthy of sympathy; MDMA's just a molecule someone cooked up in a lab.

Read it. Own it. Worked at a comic book shoppe when it came out: Scotts Comics @ 23rd and Mission. Remember that, SF heads?

But while I remember that as a great run of BM artist/writer combos. . .that rang false even before I immersed myself into the drug subculture.

(and the first time I dropped I was like OMG OMG I'm so Happyyyyyyyy!!!. . .)

You want a killer drug? No F-ing contest: Booze is the drug to die by and kill by, hands down.

I think I shall now drink champagne and inhale illicit substances: and the neighborhood is still safe: Thanks Batman!

kleer001, Not possible if they had actual pure MDMA.
More likely your friends took something being passed of as Ecstasy (like DXM)or a badly adulterated mixture with MDMA and other drugs in a single pill.

Nothing is ever 'not possible', as everyone has the potential to be allergic to anything... but the drive of your comment is right.

kleer001: I can almost guarantee that the people you know did one or a combination of 3 things:

1) Took a pressed X pill, which can contain just about anything. All one has to do is go to pillreports.com or the Microgram Bulletin as linked on BB last year to see what kinds of crazy crap ends up in pills sold as X.

2) Took a combination of various drugs, or several different X pills under the assumption that they were all the same. Not all drugs play nice. I've had ketamine sold as X before... there are no safeguards beyond getting a reagent kit (finding and using only one dealer you trust can help with this, but it's never a guarantee).

3) Had underlying or pre-existing problems which remained hidden in their sober state, but came out under the emotional outpouring that is common for some takers of X.

What a load of shit the war on drugs is... what a waste of life and resources. In any case, we all know that batman is keeping a little secret - look >>
